Eagles Battle with No. 15 Roanoke

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team battled with No. 15 Roanoke at Bridgewater Stadium before falling 16-7 in ODAC action on Saturday evening.

The Eagles dedicated the game to Morgan's Message, which is an organization founded in honor of former Duke University women's lacrosse player Morgan Rodgers who lost her battled with mental health issues and continues to help fight the stigma associated with mental health issues with student-athletes. HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Roanoke started off the game with a pair of goals in the first four minutes as Sydney Harrison and Libby Bowman each scored. Lauren Roberts scored on a free-position shot to cut the deficit in half at 2-1 with 10:44 left in the first. The Maroons added two more goals to go ahead 4-1, but Annika Benson was fed by Roberts to make it 4-2 with 9:18 to go. The Maroons struck for six straight goals to take a 10-2 lead into the second quarter. 
  • Benson ended the scoring run by the visitors with a goal with 13 minutes left in the half, but again, Roanoke strung together three-straight goals to send the game into the halftime break with a 13-3 lead.
  • Raegan Becker made it an 11-goal game to start off the second half, but Kaity Petersheim tallied a goal to take it down to 14-4. Another Maroons goal was followed by a score from Paige Mayers and Roberts as the Eagles trailed 15-6 heading to the final period. 
  • Roberts started the scoring in the fourth with a goal at the 7:16 mark, but it was all the closer the Eagles got as an Addison Widmer goal set the score at 16-7, which held until the final whistle.
GAME STATS
  • Roberts had a hat trick with an assist to lead the way with a four-point day. 
  • Benson had two goals, while Petersheim and Mayers each tallied one score.
  • Roberts led the team with three draw controls, while Grace Pietro had two.
  • Mayers and Maisen Jenkins both scooped up three ground balls, while Lindsay Davis had two of her own. Mayers also led the team with a pair of caused turnovers.
  • Rachael Robinson started in the cage and made eight saves in the first half, while Jenkins stopped nine shots in the second half.
  • Roanoke out shot the Eagles 44-14 and had a 20-13 edge in ground balls.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater is back in action on April 9 as it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 4 pm start.
