Eagles Stung by Hornets

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team suffered a 19-6 loss to Lynchburg in ODAC action at Shellenberger Field on Thursday evening.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets started the game on a six-goal scoring run as the home side led 6-0 with 6:33 left in the first quarter. Lauren Roberts got the Eagles on the board with a goal inside the last three minutes of the frame, but Lynchburg responded with two goals in the last 40 seconds of the quarter to take an 8-1 lead into the second. 
  • The second quarter saw far less action as the first goal came with just five minutes and change left in the opening half as Neely Morris found the back of the cage for the Hornets to go up 9-1. Roberts picked up her second goal of the game in a woman-up situation followed by a goal from Kaity Petersheim with a minute to go in the second quarter as the Eagles trailed 9-3 at the halftime break.
  • Lynchburg scored the first four goals of the third quarter to get up by 10 goals at 13-3 with 8:46 showing on the clock. Annika Benson ended the scoring run as she picked up an up goal with 7:32 left in the third.Just 30 seconds later, Lynchburg responded to retake a 10-goal edge at 14-4 and scored two more before the end of the quarter.
  • The home side continued its run of goals by taking a 19-4 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the game. The Eagles were able to get a pair of goals from Madelaine Godat and Ashley Venit to get a little closer, but the Hornets were victorious, 19-6.
GAME STATS
  • Roberts led the Eagles with a pair of goals, while Petersheim, Godat, Benson and Venit all had one score apiece.
  • Petersheim snagged three draw controls, while Grace Pietro and Paige Mayers had two each. 
  • Defensively, Tavin Krick caused a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls.
  • Lindsay Davis led BC with three ground balls and Rachael Robinson joined Krick with two GBs. 
  • Maisen Jenkins started in the cage and made three saves before giving way to Rachael Robinson who played the final 40 minutes and stopped eight shots. 
  • Lynchburg out shot the Eagles 34-16 and had a 27-14 advantage in ground balls. The Hornets had the edge in draw controls as well, 17-12.

Bridgewater steps out of conference play with a tilt set with Southern Virginia on Wednesday, March 27 in Buena Vista, Virginia beginning at 5 pm.
