Eagles Prevail Over Royals

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team downed cross-town rival Eastern Mennonite, 18-4, at Bridgewater Stadium on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles controlled the first quarter of play as Paige Mayers connected with Annika Benson for the first goal of the game at the 12:31 mark. Mayers scored twice more in the quarter to complete a hat trick, while Jenna Entsminger, Brooke Hanson and Benson all scored as BC held a 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. Ashley Venit and Kena Gresham pitched in assists as well as Entsminger in the first.
  • EMU came out of the quarter break with a goal from Eve Detter to get the visitors on the board, 7-1, with 11:42 left in the half. Amber Bonds got one of her own under two minutes later and Courtney Crawford scored in a woman-up situation to cut into the lead at 7-3 with 7:41 left in the period. Gresham scored off a feed from Mayers and Kaity Petersheim scored with 3.2 seconds left in the half as the Eagles held a 9-3 lead at the recess.
  • Entsminger scored again to start off the third quarter off a pass from Delaney Kerns to push the lead to seven goals, 10-3, while Abigayle Zaudtke added to the scoring list at the 12:45 mark and Benson added another with 9:12 on the clock. The Royals cut back into the lead with a goal by Alex Palizzi with just over a minute left in the third as the game to make the score an eight-goal contest. Venit and Zaudtke scored in the last minute of the quarter to enduce a running clock and send the game to the final quarter with the Eagles on top 14-4.
  • The Eagles did all the scoring in the final period as Gresham, Mayers, Zaudtke and Petersheim all added goals as Bridgewater picked up an 18-4 win.
GAME STATS
  • With two goals on the day, Petersheim reaches 100 career goals as she approaches the top 10 in program history for career scoring. She stands with a team-high 21 goals so far this year.
  • Mayers paced the team with four goals and an assist for a five-point night, while Entsminger and Zaudtke also finished with hat tricks in the win.
  • Benson, Gresham and Petersheim all had two goals and Venit and Hanson each had one score a piece.
  • Benson led the way with three assists, while Gresham and Kerns each added a pair of helps. A total of 13 goals had assists out of 18 goals scored for the Eagles.
  • Mayers also paced the squad with five ground balls and added five draw controls, while Julia Mohler had three ground balls of her own. Gresham, Petersheim, Venit, Hanson, Rachael Robinson, Lindsay Davis and Livy Daniels all had two each.
  • Grace Pietro had six draw controls to go with her assist in the win, while Madelaine Goday had three draws and led the team with two caused turnovers. 
  • Robinson started the game and got the win after making three saves, while Maisen Jenkins played the second half stopping two of the three shots she faced. 
  • Bridgewater out shot the Royals 41-12 and had a 26-19 edge in ground balls. The Eagles also won 21 of the 24 draw controls
