FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College baseball team fell to Mary Washington on the road 6-0 Tuesday afternoon.
THE BASICS
Final Score: Mary Washington 6, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 11-6, Mary Washington 11-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMW's offense struck early in the bottom of the first inning with Ty Lowe hitting a ball to Jeffrey Snider in right field that was deep enough to plate the first run of the ball game from third. The home team then took advantage of an error from the Eagles to increase the lead to 2-0.
- The Mary Washington offense put up another run in its half of the third inning when Tommy Martinez doubled to the right field gap to go up 3-0.
- BC came out swinging in the top of the fourth inning when Brandan Hartman doubled down the right field line. TJ Johnson stepped up to the plate and drew a walk to start a two-out rally. Nick Stavros continued the run singling up the middle to load the bases. However, the home team thwarted the rally forcing a fly out on the ensuing at-bat.
- With no outs in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth, and runners on first and second, Isaac Sumpter turned a huge double play touching third for the force then throwing the ball home to prevent the runner from scoring.
- The home team tacked on its two final runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth with Bobby Ayscue singling to right field scoring the runner from second base. With a runner in scoring position Martinez plopped in a single to center field to go on and give Mary Washington the 6-0 win.
