Women's Lacrosse Outlasts Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Bridgewater College women's lacrosse team outlasted Meredith, which has won nine-straight USA South conference championships, 14-13, in non-conference action at the Meredith Track & Field Complex on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater started the scoring as Jenna Entsminger netted a man-up goal with 12:28 left in the first quarter. Annika Benson added another one less than a minute later to give the Eagles a 2-0 edge. Lauren Roberts registered a pair of goals in back-to-back fashion as BC assumed a 4-0 lead with 3:54 remaining in the opening frame. Kenzie Todd got the Avenging Angels on the board at the 3:14 mark to end the scoring run before a man-down goal from Arrianna May got the home side within a pair of goals with 1:47 left on the clock. The scoreline held until through the end of the period
  • May scored her second of the game in man-up fashion to tie the game in the opening moments of the second quarter, but the Eagles responded with a score at the 12:47 mark as Roberts completed a hat trick to push BC back in front, 5-4. Scoring her fourth goal of the game, Roberts found the back of the net to make the score 6-4 in favor of Bridgewater. Back-to-back goals from Meredith tied the game for a second time at 6-6 with 6:43 remaining in the opening half. The two sides traded scores as Entsminger got her second off a pass from Benson, but Reese Walker squared the game at 7-7 with just over three and a half minutes in the first half. The Avenging Angels capitalized for two scores before the break as the home side held a 9-7 edge at the break.
  • Another Avenging Angels' goal brought it up to a three-score game with 13 minutes left in the third, but Roberts netted her fifth of the game to keep the game within two goals. Brooke Hanson scored under 30 seconds later to cut the deficit down to just one goal. Although, the home side pulled ahead by another as Todd scored again to make it 11-9 with 6:22 to go in the third. Battling back once again, Entsminger cut the lead down to one goal as she completed her own hat trick with 4:02 on the clock but a responding Avenging Angels pulled ahead by two with a goal from Walker less than 90 seconds later. Kaity Petersheim hit on her first goal to send the game into the fourth quarter with the score at 12-11 in favor of Meredith. 
  • A resilient attack from MC took the game to 13-11 in the opening moments of the final frame of regulation. Ashley Venit tallied her first of the game to cut the game back down to one goal with Aunnie Hacker capitalizing to tie the contest at 13-13 with 10 minutes showing on the scoreboard. Bridgewater controlled the ensuing draw after a Meredith timeout and Petersheim raced down the field and scored again as the Eagles assumed a 14-13 lead. Inside of four minutes left in the game, Meredith had a long-lasting offensive possession that saw the Avenging Angels get multiple shots on net with Rachael Robinson coming up clutch with saves.The home side had one more chance in the waning seconds as May had a shot with 40 seconds in the game, but a save from Robinson iced the game as the Eagles walked away with a 14-13 victory. 
GAME STATS
  • Roberts led all scorers with five goals as she connected on two free-position shots out of three attempts and also collected a pair of ground balls and four draw controls. 
  • Entsminger and Benson each had three points with Entsminger finishing with three goals and Benson scoring once with two assists. 
  • Petersheim netted a pair of goals, including the game's winner, with four draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. 
  • Tavin Krick led the team with three ground balls to go with a game-high three caused turnovers, while Maisen Jenkins also had two GBs in the win. 
  • Grace Pietro led the Eagles with six draw controls.
  • Robinson made 12 saves in 43 minutes in the cage, while Jenkins stopped one shot in her 17-minutes plus in net. 
  • Meredith outshot Bridgewater 34-31, while the Avenging Angels had a 19-12 edge in ground balls. However, the Eagles had a 17-14 edge in draw controls.

Bridgewater has a week off before returning to action at McDaniel on Thursday, March 7, at 5 pm.
