HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One:
  • The Eagles got runners on the base paths in the top of the first and loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks before Piedmont got out of the jam unscathed. Mackenzie Cauthorn sat the home side down in order before BC had another chance. The Eagles loaded the bases again. Bridgewater had two chances, but a pair of fielder's choices sent the game scoreless after an inning and a half.
  • Piedmont took advantage of the zeroes put on the board by its defense. The leadoff runner was tagged by a pitch, but a pair of sacrifice bunts allowed for the Lions to take the lead 1-0 in the home half of the second. BC had a chance to bounce back as Jazmyne Smith led the inning off with a single and Lexi Schaaf followed later with a walk, but a pair of strikeouts helped the ions maintain their lead.
  • Each team had chances down the stretch with runners on the base paths, but timely pitching and defense helped each side stay at a 1-0 game.
  • The top of the seventh did not start out ideally for BC with a lineout, but Jordan Wise reached on an infield single to get the potential game-tying run on the base paths. McKenna Mueller was tagged by a pitch and Peyton Gregory singled to load the bases with just one gone in the frame. The Lions made a change in the circle and got the second out of the frame via the punchout. Kaelyn Ramsey pinch hit next, and her patience paid off as she drew a walk to push across Hannah Mahan, who pinch ran for Wise, to tie the game. Andrea Savage dug in next and put the ball in play, but Piedmont got the out it needed to send the game to the home half of the frame.
  • The Lions grounded out to start the bottom of the seventh, but a double in the next at bat put the game-winning run in scoring position. Piedmont went to a pinch hitter next, and she delivered with a base knock to drive in the game-winning run.

GAME STATS:
  • Delaney Lail tallied the only multi-hit effort of the contest for the Eagles as she went 2-for-3 at the dish in game one.
  • Cauthorn was on the hook for the loss after she went the full distance and allowed a pair of earned runs along with five strikeouts.
  • Piedmont cashed in on its chances with just three runners left on the base paths compared to 12 runners left on for the Eagles.
GAME TWO
  • Each side went down in order to start game two before the Lions got a runner on in the bottom of the second. Piedmont worked the runner around to third, but a pair of flyouts kept the game scoreless.
  • Bridgewater pushed the first run across in the top of the third as a trio of singles by Schaaf, Mueller and Sara Kate Tozier jammed up the basses. Wise dug in next and put a ball in play. The sophomore reached on a fielder's choice as the Lions got the out at third, allowing Schaaf to score and make it 1-0. The Lions got out of the jam with a pair of punch outs keeping the BC lead to just a run. Piedmont looked to respond as it loaded the bases with just one out. Samantha Martin worked a pair of flyouts to end the frame and keep the lead intact for the Eagles.
  • Each team had runners on in the fourth, but the frame went by without a run. BC got a runner on in the fifth thanks to a Tozier single, but she was left stranded. The Lions took advantage of the missed opportunity as they let the home side of the frame off with a single. A stolen base and a BC error allowed for the tying run to score. Piedmont utilized the sacrifice bunt once more before a flyout to right field allowed for Piedmont to step in front 2-1 after five innings of play.
  • Bridgewater responded immediately as Caroline Malandra doubled to left field to open the sixth. Piedmont looked to weather the storm with a pair of flyouts but a walk by Ramsey and another Tozier single loaded the bases again for the Eagles. The lineup flipped over and Tozier delivered with a base-clearing double to put the Eagles in front 4-2. Piedmont struck back right away as a pair of base hits drove in a run to slice the lead to just a run. The Lions had a pair of runners on when the Eagles made a change in the circle, but Erica Nelson induced a flyout to hang on to the lead.
  • Lail looked to add to the lead as she led the seventh off with a single. The Eagles got the runner all the way to third before she was left stranded, keeping Piedmont a swing away from tying the game. Nelson went to work in the circle looking to close the game out and did so behind a pair of ground outs and a flyout.

GAME STATS:
  • Mueller delivered when called on in game two with a pair of hits and three RBI. Tozier also turned in a 3-for-3 game at the dish along with a run scored.
  • Martin got the win for BC in the circle after allowing a single earned run. Nelson registered the save after retiring the final four batters of the contest in order.
  • Kaitlin Isley went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Lions in the loss along with a pair of stolen bases and a run scored.
