Eagles Split Series with N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT N.C. – The Bridgewater College baseball team fell to N.C. Wesleyan in extra innings 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater broke the goose egg in the first inning when Jeffrey Snider drew a walk, then Brandan Hartman singled to right field advancing Snider to second who came home on a throwing error. Nick Stavros flied out to left and Luke Tomajczyk lined out to short stop leaving Hartman stranded.
  • N.C. Wesleyan responded immediately with the lead off hitter doubling to left field, then being brought home by two ground outs to tie the score at 1-1. Nick Harris got out of the inning producing a fly ball for an easy catch by Tomajczyk.
  • The Battling Bishops fired up the bats in the adding three more runs in the bottom of the second. The Eagles, trailing 4-1, tried to create a run on offense but were stopped by effective play on the mound.
  • BC mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth. Tristan Gordon coming up to bat with two outs singled to left field, then Christian Harris reached first successfully following a wild pitch. Snider loaded the bases with a single to the short stop which brought up Hartman who slapped a grand slam over the left field wall to give Bridgewater the 5-4 advantage. NCWU brought in a new pitcher who closed out the inning on a fly out.
  • Joe Christopher came in relief for Nick Harris and held the N.C. Wesleyan offense in check through the bottom of the fifth and sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Battling Bishops had two miscues allowing Christian Harris and Snider to get on base. With Snider on third, Stavros hit a deep fly ball to left field allowing Snider to score on a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-4.
  • In the top of the eighth, Lucas Bauer drove a ball to left field which brought Kyle Carlson up who moved Bauer up on a sacrifice hit. Gordon doubled to right to bring Bauer home, then Christian Harris repeated with a double to score Gordon and increase the score 8-4. The Battling Bishops went to their bullpen to get out of the inning. A wild pitch by BC in the bottom of the eighth brought home a runner to put NCWU down three.
  • A late offensive surge in the bottom of the ninth led to a comeback for N.C. Wesleyan. A home run put the Battling Bishops within two and was followed by a double to left. With NCWU threatening on the base path back-to-back singles tied the game 8-8.
  • In extras, Bridgewater was unable to get the bats rolling which brought the Battling Bishops up to bat. NCWU pulled off the walk off with a single to left field making the final 9-8.
GAME STATS
  • The Eagles had three hitters with two hits. Hartman led the offense going 2-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam and four RBIs.
  • N.C. Wesleyan was led offensively by Tyson Bass who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and scoring three runs.
  • Nick Harris started the game going 4.0 innings striking out three while allowing four runs on five hits. Christopher was effective in relief going 4.0 innings, giving up one run and striking out five. Nick Griffin was given the loss after going 0.2 innings and giving up the game winning run.
  • Andrew Tubb got the start for the Battling Bishops going 4.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits while recording six strikeouts. Cullen Davis was given the win pitching 1.0 inning striking out two to close out the game.
