Field Hockey Secures Double Overtime Win Over St. Mary's Maryland

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College field hockey took it to double overtime to then land the game-winning goal, besting St. Mary's (Md.) 2-1 at home Sunday afternoon.

The Basics

Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 2, St. Mary's Maryland (SMCM) 1

Records: BCE (6-3-1 Overall), SMCM (3-8 Overall)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles got off to a slow start entering the game with the first shot not coming until seven minutes into the first period. BCE would have its chances in its attacking circle with two penalty corners, but SMCM earned the opening point with two minutes left in the first.

  • Multiple scoring chances would unravel in the second period for the Eagles with two additional penalty corners, but the Seahawks held them scoreless.

  • Then, the scoring chance in the third would be executed for BCE. Lexi Francis received the entry feed from Rylie Flick in the circle to unleash the equalizer.

  • As physical play continued in the fourth, SMCM received a green card with one off the field for two minutes and BCE with the advantage. However, the defense mustered a clean stop.

  • In overtime, only three shots were launched at the goal in the first overtime and the score remained the same. Then, quickly into the second overtime, Mollie Best closed it out with an aggressive attack and as much as the defense worked to clear, off of a penalty corner including a defensive save, Best kept on the gas and nailed the game-winning point.

Game Notes

  • The Eagles led in the shot totals with 13 and nine on target to the Seahawks' seven with five on target.

  • BCE had eight penalty corners with the final one being successful (SMCM with two).

  • Sophomore Lexi Francis passed her season high total in goals scored with four this season (three in 2023).
