HOW IT HAPPENED
- Roanoke opened the game with back-to-back makes before each side went dry for nearly two minutes. Abby Freeman knocked down a pair at the line before a Maroon free throw extended the lead back to three. Jaden Alsberry pulled the Eagles back to within a point with BC's first field goal, but another Roanoke free throw pushed the Maroons out just a bit further. A second-chance bucket from Freeman knotted the game 6-6 before Roanoke took the lead back as Rose Sande sunk RC's first field goal in four and a half minutes. Roanoke pushed the lead to 11-8 before Reagan Maynard drained a three-pointer and a layup from Riley Corcoran the next trip down gave the Eagles a 13-11 advantage. RC replied with a 7-0 run over the final 2:01 of the frame to take a 18-13 edge to the second quarter.
- The opening minute of the frame went scoreless as both defenses had their way. Maynard got BC on the board first with a layup and combined that with two makes at the charity stripe from Freeman to get Bridgewater to within a point before another Sande long ball pushed the lead back out. Roanoke made it a 23-17 game before Alsberry found Freeman on the low block for a hard earned two drawing BC back to within four. Rande struck again for Roanoke as she and Jada Steele combined for consecutive makes before a 6-0 run from BC got the Eagles back to within a possession at 27-25. Right on cue, Roanoke drilled a long-range jumper inside of the final minute to take a 30-25 advantage to the locker room.
- The third quarter saw lots of good defense as neither side got on the board for the opening 3:36 until Roanoke strung together two makes to push its lead out to nine. A Maynard make at the charity stripe and a hook shot from Jay Garcia put the BC offense back in business before a Roanoke bucket stalled the momentum. The Maroons make sparked a 7-3 run to make it a 41-31 with a minute remaining in the third quarter. Alexis Edmonds drained a three-pointer from the corner inside the final 20 seconds to make it 41-34 heading to the final 10 minutes.
- Freeman found Alsberry to get the scoring started in the fourth quarter. That combined with a pair of free throws from Maynard, brought the Eagles back to within four with 8:55 to go. Roanoke once more responded on cue with a 14-0 run and held the Eagles scoreless for over five minutes to make it 56-38 with 2:44 left on the clock. Alsberry ended the scoring drought before another Roanoke three-pointer made it a 19-point game. Garcia made a layup in the final minute, but the damage had already been done.
