Daum's Late Score Pushes Women's Soccer Past SVU

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Bridgewater College women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory to open the season behind a late goal from Skyler Daum.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 2, Southern Virginia 1
Records: Bridgewater 1-0-0, Southern Virginia 0-1-0

How It Happened
  • The Eagles opened the game with early pressure with three corner kicks in the opening seven minutes of play. Hannah Nugent got BC's first shot on net on the second of those chances, but Ensley Anderson got a piece of it and knocked it out of play giving BC another try at a corner. This time Laura Narby got her boot on a shot for BC and Anderson again shut the door.
  • Narby got the BC offense rolling again as she and Daum both fired shots that missed the cage. Nugent kept the pressure up a few minutes later as she rifled a shot on goal only to have the door shut by Anderson. The Knights put together a run in the closing minutes of the half and got a shot off that went wide of the cage.
  • The Knights got the action started in the second half with a shot in the opening minute that sailed over the crossbar. Bridgewater retaliated a few moments later as the Eagles mounted an attack. Lyric Birkley received a pass in the corner from Daum and sent it across the goal mouth where Narby put it away to give BC the lead in the 52nd minute.
  • Bridgewater continued to apply pressure, but Southern Virginia retaliated with pressure of their own as Maybel Harris fired a shot from deep up and passed the outstretched arms of Carlee Gaboury to knot the game with seven minutes to play.
  • SVU pushed the pace right after the game-tying goal trying to control the possession in the BC defensive half. The Eagles forced a Knights turnover and Maren Dougherty cleared the ball down the pitch where Birkley won the foot race for it. The sophomore made a move in and then back out to lay the ball on for Daum. The senior dribbled in and fired a curling shot just beyond the box and it found nylon to put Bridgewater ahead 2-1 with six minutes left to play.
  • Southern Virginia had one last push with a free kick from midfield in the final minute, but Gaboury scooped up the long shot to seal the deal.

Match Notes
  • Narby's early second half goal is the first of her collegiate career. She and Nugent led all players with three shots.
  • Birkley racked up an assist on the night but made two key plays that led to both BC scores.
  • Anderson made six stops on eight shots she faced for SVU while Gaboury made a pair of saves on three shots on net for BC.
  • Bridgewater won the shooting battle 14-8 in total and 8-3 in shots on target.
  • BC picks up a season opening victory for the fourth time in the last five season. The last time the Eagles lost a season opener was a year ago to the same SVU Knights.
