Biesecker Breaks Hits Record Against EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Jarret Biesecker broke the Bridgewater College baseball career hits record on Wednesday in the Eagles' loss to Eastern Mennonite.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Eastern Mennonite 13, Bridgewater 12
Records: Bridgewater 12-17 (5-6 ODAC); Eastern Mennonite 6-21 (1-10 ODAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
  • The Bridgewater offense exploded in the top of the first putting up seven runs before EMU ever got to the plate. Biesecker led the way in the frame accounting for a pair of hits to tie the program record for hits in a career. In total, BC came to the plate 10 times during the inning and had RBI base knocks from Biesecker, Hunter Clever, Collin Reid, Isaac Sumpter and Kyle Carlson.
  • The Royals responded by plating two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to make it 7-2. Brandan Hartman led the second off with a double to extend his ODAC lead in the category. Reid singled and pushed runners to the corners and a rip from Sumpter brought Hartman in to extend the lead. Reid later scored on a balk to extend the lead to 9-2.
  • Eastern Mennonite drew back to within two with a four-run bottom of the second and with another run it tagged on in the third. In the top of the fifth Biesecker stepped in the box and connected with a single to right field for career hit 236 to break the record and put a runner aboard. A Hartman walk put two runners on for Clever and the senior delivered his second multi-run base hit of the day as both Eagles scored pushing the lead back to four.
  • A solo homerun and a sacrifice fly kept EMU within striking distance before a RBI groundout from Carlson gave the Eagles an important insurance run in the sixth.
  • After a pair of walks in the seventh BC elected to go to Brett Tharp for the rare nine-out save opportunity. EMU was able to push a run across in the frame by virtue of a BC error to make it 12-10. Tharp tried to add his own run support in the top of the ninth as he legged a triple and tried to extend it even further, but was hosed down at home. A walk and a single put two runners on for the home side in the bottom of the ninth with just one gone in the frame. Natty Solomon stepped in next and walked it off for the Royals with a three-run blast to right field.
GAME STATS
  • Biesecker's 236th career hit breaks the program record that was held by former BC assistant coach and current Mary Baldwin head coach Scott Hearn. Hearn finished his playing career in 2003 with 235 base knocks. Biesecker is also one of just seven Eagles to reach the 200 hit threshold.
  • Clever had a massive day at the plate with four runs driven in and the Waynesboro, Pa. native scored once as well.
  • Hartman extended his streak to 27 straight games where he has reached base safely. His 15 doubles on the season ranks second in the nation.
  • Sumpter reached safely in four of his trips to the plate including a pair of hits and a par of walks.
  • Solomon finished with five RBI for the Royals including a trio on his game-winning homer.
