Softball Splits Against Guilford

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College softball team split a pair of games against Guilford College in a home ODAC doubleheader.

THE BASICS
Final Score: (Game 1) Bridgewater 5, Guilford 2; (Game 2) Guilford 3, Bridgewater 2
 
Records: Bridgewater 20-14, 10-4 ODAC; Guilford 21-15, 11-7 ODAC

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game one sat scoreless for the first four and a half innings. The Eagles broke the scoring drought first in the bottom of the fourth as Andrea Savage kicked things off with a single to center field bringing Cheyenne Barlow across the plate to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles offense exploded adding four runs to their total. McKenna Mueller opened the offense surge with a single on a bunt that allowed Hannah Mahan to score. Mackenzie Cauthorn, who came in to pinch hit for Brooklynn Fridley, slapped a ball to right center bringing Mueller and Torie Shifflett across the dish. Peyton Gregory scored the final run of the day for the Eagles as she scored on the throw to second by the Quakers who attempted to catch Fridley stealing.
  • Guilford finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning. Anna Frazier uncorked a homerun to deep left center bringing home Grace Calus in the process to put the Quakers to within three.
  • The Quakers put runners aboard in the seventh, but were unable to complete the comeback as Erica Nelson slammed the door throwing a strikeout for the final out of the game.
GAME STATS
  • Samantha Martin picked up her fifth win on the season for the Eagles while Nelson grabbed her second save on the year. Martin pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only 5 hits while recording two punchouts. Nelson recording a strikeout and allowed only 2 hits in 1.1 innings of work.
  • Fridley and Mahan both registered stolen bases in game one.
  • Seven total Eagles recorded hits in game one highlighted by Cauthorn who went 1-for-1 at the dish registering two RBIs
  • McKenna Mueller went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one and drove in a run.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater lit the score column on the scoreboard first once again in game two as Shifflet got things started with a double down the left field line to bring Mahan across the plate. Shifflett was brought home by Mueller who knocked a single to left center to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the bottom of the third.
  • The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when Abbie Hill grounded out to the pitcher allowing Emma Patterson to score. Ally Morales slapped a double to right center bringing Kassidy Lancos across the dish to even the score at two all. Anna Frazier knocked a single to center field allowing Morales to score for the go ahead run putting the Quakers up 3-2.
  • Bridgewater fought back in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan Lucas reached base on a single in the second at bat. Lucas was left stranded as Shiloh Gray got out of the jam. Fridley got on base in the bottom of the seventh with a single to right center but was thrown out on a double play in the next at bat and a groundout during the next plate appearance ended the contest.
 
GAME STATS
  • Gray picked up her 11th win on the season pitching a complete game for the Quakers. 
  • Mackenzie Cauthorn tossed five strikeouts and allowed only four hits in 5.2 innings of work but took the loss.
  • Shifflett went 2-for-3 at the plate and registered a RBI in game two.
  • McKenna Mueller also recorded an RBI in game two going 1-for-2 at the dish.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, April 26 as they travel to Salem, Va. to take on Roanoke in a conference doubleheader.
