Big Fourth Inning Sparks Softball's Split with Lynchburg

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College softball team split a pair of games against the University of Lynchburg in a home ODAC doubleheader.

THE BASICS
Final Score: (Game 1) Lynchburg 2, Bridgewater 1; (Game 2) Bridgewater 5, Lynchburg 2

Records: Bridgewater 19-13, 9-3 ODAC; Lynchburg 21-14, 9-7 ODAC

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets opened the day with a Carly Hudnall single to right field. Mackenzie Cauthorn struck Lexi Powell out in the following at bat. Following a pop fly from Karle Cundiff, Hudnall stole second. The Hornets would end the inning on a Sarah Watts flyout leaving one runner on base.
  • The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning where the Eagles got on the board first. Torie Shifflett slapped a single to left center bringing home Averi Phillips, who came in to pinch run for Andrea Savage , giving the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
  • The Hornets immediately responded in the top of the sixth as Watts knocked a ball to left center bringing Hudnall home to even the score at 1-1. In the top of the seventh, the Hornets put the game away as Addison Walter crossed the plate as a result of a fielder's choice putting the Hornets up 2-1. Hannah Mahan got on base for BC by virtue of an error in the bottom of the seventh but was left stranded.
GAME STATS
  • Emily Charlton pitched a complete game for the Hornets, picking up her eighth win of the season.
  • Cauthorn pitched 6.1 innings recording two strikeouts and allowing only four hits on 98 pitches thrown.
  • Both starting pitchers dueled, only allowing four hits apiece.
  • Shifflett recorded the Eagles' lone RBI of the game.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Hornets struck first in the top of the third as Sophie Tully scored, tagging up on Alyssa Talayumptewa's line out to left field putting the Hornets up 1-0.
  • Bridgewater exploded offensively in the bottom of the fourth and blew the game open. McKenna Mueller dug in with the bases loaded and delivered with a double bringing pinch runners Sarah Kate Tozier and Phillips in to score. Jordan Wise kept the scoring going as she grounded out and allowed Brooklynn Fridley to score. Mueller crossed the plate next as Savage extended the inning with a single. Lynchburg elected to make a pitching change, but Shifflett kept them going with a double in the gap scoring the freshman Savage to make it 5-1.
  • BC responded with a three-up three-down inning from Samantha Martin in the top of the fifth. Bridgewater had runners aboard with back-to-back base rips from Sarah Wimer and Morgan Lucas, but both were left stranded.
  • The Hornets made things interesting with a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. An Eagle error and a groundout allowed for the visitors to close the gap but a pop up to Lucas at first ended the contest.

GAME STATS
  • Martin went the advertised distance for her first complete game of the season. The Toms River, N.J. native struck out six Hornets in game two on the way to the victory in the circle.
  • Five different Eagles recorded hits in game two highlighted by Wimer and Mueller who each had a pair of base knocks.
  • Lucas reached safely three different time with a pair of walks and a base rip.
