Softball Splits Doubleheader

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team split an ODAC doubleheader Randolph on Saturday.

THE BASICS
Final Score: (Game 1) Bridgewater 3, Randolph 1; (Game 2) Randolph 9, Bridgewater 5
Records: Bridgewater 13-9, 3-1 ODAC; Randolph 15-9, ODAC 2-2

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles got on the board first in the top of the fourth after a quiet first three innings from both teams. McKenna Mueller drove in Averi Phillips with a single to right field to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge.
  • The WildCats responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth as Kylie Stark reached first on a fielder's choice bringing Delaney Nuckols across the plate to even the score 1-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, Morgan Lucas crossed the plate on a sacrifice flyout from Mueller to put the Eagles ahead on the scoreboard. Cheyanne Barlow crossed the plate in the same manner as Hannah Mahan flied out putting the Eagles ahead 3-1.
  • Starting pitcher Brantley Swift put Randolph down in order in the sixth and seventh to secure victory.  
GAME STATS
  • Swift tossed a complete game and allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts to grab her third victory of the season.
  • Mueller went 2-for-2 at the dish in game one recording a pair of RBI.
  • Five different Eagles recorded hits in game one including Mueller, Sarah Wimer, Morgan Lucas, Andrea Savage, and Jordan Wise.
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Randolph got on the board in a hurry as Dominique Irving crossed the plate in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Jenna McDermott. Nuckols slapped a single down the first-base line to bring in Lacey Lucado in the bottom of third.
  • Stark drove in a run with a single to left field pushing the Wildcats lead to 3-0 to end the third inning.
  • The Eagles fought back in the fourth finally getting on the board as Phillips crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Jazmyne Smith drove in Peyton Gregory with a single and Smith later came around to score on another wild pitch evening the score 3-3.
  • Randolph responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as Michaela Williams drew a bases-loaded walk. Lucado was hit by a pitch, advancing the runners and allowing Brooke Rolocut to cross the plate. Irving crossed the plate for Randolph on a walk that advanced the baserunners pushing the score to 6-3 for the WildCats.
  • In the next at bat, Stark slapped a two-run single down the left-field line to increase the WildCats' lead to 8-3. Railey Oetken knocked a single to right field driving in a run and increasing the lead to 9-3 for the WildCats. 
  • The Eagles answered in the top of the sixth as Brooklyn Fridley slapped a single to right field bringing Mahan home in the process. BC was able to get one more run back as Jordan Wise drove in a run in the seventh to bring the Eagles within four runs, but the final score of 9-5 held.
GAME STATS
  • Six Eagles recorded hits in game two.
  • Wimer went 3-for-4 at the dish in the night cap.
  • Wise, Smith and Fridley recorded RBI for the Eagles.
  • Mackenzie Cauthorn went 3.1 innings as she started in the circle before Elena Williams came in for relief. Erica Nelson entered for the final 2.1 innings and held Randolph scoreless and scattered just three hits.
UP NEXT
The Eagles are back in action at home tomorrow for a doubleheader against ODAC foe Shenandoah at 1 pm.
