Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Penn State Altoona

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College baseball team split a doubleheader with Penn State Altoona on Friday afternoon.

Game 1
Final Score: Bridgewater 19, Penn State Altoona 9
Records: Bridgewater 1-5, Penn State Altoona 0-1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Nittany Lions scored the top of the first inning after a balk was called. The Eagles wasted no time in responding as Jeffrey Snider walked and then swiped second base to move into scoring position. Hunter Clever followed him with a walk and Brandan Hartman delivered with a double the next at-bat to bring Snider in to knot the game 1-1.
  • Both starting pitchers started to settle in until the bottom the fourth. Brett Tharp came to the plate with two gone and runners on the corners. Tharp hit what looked to be a routine fly ball to left field, but the fielder misjudged the ball allowing for Tharp to reach safely and both base runners to score giving the Eagles their first lead of the contest 3-1.
  • The top of the fifth inning opened with a flyout in foul territory to Kyle Carlson at third, but a pair of base knocks and hit by pitch loaded the base for the Nittany Lions. A sacrifice fly allowed for the Penn State Altoona to get one run back with two away in the inning. Another hit by pitch loaded the bases again and Zach Ingold capitalized for visitors with a grand slam over the tall wall in right field giving the Nittany Lions a 6-3 advantage.
  • BC got one run back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an Isaiah Blanks double that pushed Carlson into score, cutting the deficit to just two. The bottom of the seventh is where the game completely changed. The Eagles put up 11 runs on 11 hits and just a pair of Penn Sate Altoona errors. Snider homered and added a RBI double in the frame, Hartman hit a pair of ground-rule doubles, scoring a run each time to help blow the game open.
  • The visitors got three back in the top half of the eighth, but BC answered as Hartman cleared the basses on a three RBI double to help seal the deal in game one.
MATCH FACTS
  • Hartman tallied six RBI in the win after four doubles in a 4/6 effort at the dish.
  • Ingold's longball gave him four RBI for the visitors in a three-for-four mark at the plate and a stolen base.
  • Tanner Ray picked up the win for BC after tossing 1.2 innings scoreless and adding three strikeouts.
  • Bowe Rogers came into the game late and tossed two innings and struck out four Nittany Lions to close out the contest.
  • Alex Kitko took the loss for Penn State Altoona after giving up six runs over two innings of work.
Game 2
Final Score: Penn State Altoona 5, Bridgewater 3
Records: Bridgewater 1-6, Penn State Altoona 1-1

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hartman picked up where he left off as the second half of the twinbill got started. The catcher led off the top of the second inning with a homerun to left-center field putting the home side in front early.
  • The visiting side responded immediately in its half of the third. A pair of singles put two runners on. Grant Barberich delivered with a double to clear the base paths and put the Nittany Lions back in front 2-1.
  • Tharp opened the bottom half of the third with a walk and a stolen base to put him in scoring position with no outs. After a Jarret Biesecker groundout, Tharp advanced to third and scored on a Snider double the next at-bat, tying the game 2-2
  • The two pitching staffs settled in after the trading of early runs. James Swart came in for BC and did not allow an earned run in over three innings in relief. The right-hander got some run support in the bottom of the sixth as Blanks popped a ball up in foul territory just deep enough to allow Hartman to tag up and score.
  • Swart opened the seventh with a walk but struck out the next batter he faced. The Eagles made a pitching change, pulling Tharp in from right field to try and close out the game. The lead-off man had worked his way to third after a groundout and a stolen base with two outs. The following Nittany Lion hitter grounded a ball to the left side of the infield but neither BC infielder was able to make the play allowing for the visitors to tie the game and extend the inning. Penn State Altoona took the lead later in the inning after a single by Jake Hillard pushed the go ahead run across. The Nittany Lions added an insurance run on another BC error, pushing their lead to 5-3.
  • Bridgewater got the lead-off man aboard in the bottom of the ninth after Ben Anderson fought at the dish and earned a walk. Biesecker was able to get the tying run aboard when he singled pushing Luke Tomajczyk to second after he came in to pinch run for Anderson. A pair of strike outs by Mack Meengs shut down the BC comeback to allow for the visitors to take game two.
