STAUNTON, Va. - Both Bridgewater College tennis teams competed at the Golden Acorn Invitational hosted by Mary Baldwin highlighted by the men's team winning the event.
The event consisted of teams of teams of six competing in a Davis Cup style format with two doubles and two singles matches with a deciding tie break if the final score was tied at 2-2.Â
The Women picked up a 4-0 sweep to start the day over a team made up of players from multiple schools. The men's a team also opened with a 9-0 sweep over a team from multiple schools that featured singles wins from
Bryce Cline and
Mark Gordon while
Corey Beshoar/
Matthew Leonard and
Gabe Elder/
Noah Hughes picked up the doubles victories.Â
The ladies swept Trinity for the second straight day behind doubles wins from Emma Nesselrodt/
Grace Knighton and
Raea Crabill/
Emma Staton and Singles wins from
Emily Wylie and
Jolexie Whetzel. The men's A team kept the winning theme going during the second slate of matches as Leonard and Cline picked up singles wins and Elder/Gordon and Hughes/Beshoar combined for a 4-0 sweep of Ferrum.
In the final round iof competition the women fell to Marymount 1-3 as
Emily Wylie and Jolexie Wehtzel picked up a win at the top spot in doubles action. The Men's B team got on the board as they swept the team from multiple schools as
Coree Nicely and
Steven Perry picked up singles wins and
Nicholas Arnold/
Ryan Briggman and Hughes/
Trevor Lawson picked up doubles victories.Â
The men's A team wrapped up with a tight matchup with Marymount. The Saints picked up the singles points but Gordon/Cline along with Hughes/Leonard picked up doubles wins to force a deciding 10-point tiebreak. The Eagles elected to stay with the successful doubles pairing of Leonard and Hughes. The duo did not dissapoint with a 10-8 win to take the Golden Acorn.Â
For their efforts Leonard and Hughes were named Tournament MVPs.
