Women's Soccer Survives Penalty Kicks to Advance

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team moved past Guilford in the ODAC Quarterfinals on penalty kicks on Tuesday night.

The Basics

Final Score: Bridgewater 1, Guilford 1
Records: Bridgewater 12-5-1, Guilford 13-2-4

How it Happened
  • Both sides felt each other out over the opening few minutes before Guilford registered the first scoring chance as Carlee Gaboury made a save on a shot from Olivia Santos. Bridgewater flipped the field on the counterattack leading to a corner kick. Alicia Keo got a look on the kick and her shot was blocked out of play leading to another corner kick. BC did not get an initial shot off, but the pressure led to a shot on target from Birkley that was saved by Ady Franken.
  • Bridgewater kept the pressure on. Shots by Katelyn Seagraves, Laura Narby and Kendall Garza gave BC opportunities, but none found the target. Nearing the final 15 minutes of the half, Seagraves and Birkley each got shots on target but a pair of nifty saves from Franken kept the game scoreless. Keo had another chance of her own but missed just wide. Guilford earned a corner in ghe 41st minyte and chaos insued. The initial ball went into the box where the Quakers fired a shot that was cleared off the line by Garza. The two sides wrestled for possession in front of the goal before it popped out and Grace Garraghty put it into the back of the net to give Guilford a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
  • The Eagles worked down the field early in the second half. Skyler Daum got a good look just over two minutes in and it found the right post. The shot set the tone for the eternity of the second half. Bridgewater controlled nearly all the possession during the second half and turned it into more and more offensive chances. Birkley and Daum each had chances during the 51st minute and Birkley's chance found the post while Daum had both of her shots blocked. A pair of corner kicks led to two more shots from Garza and Birkley but they all missed the crease.
  • BC kept knocking on the door and at sometimes were literally trying to beat it down. In the 61st minute Daum bet Franken and had the top shelf open but nailed the post. The senior had a good look again and this time Franken made the leaping save to keep the Quakers in front. Keo proceeded to have a flurry of chances approaching the 70-minute mark. The senior, on cue, nailed the left post with a shot, missed high and had a shot saved in a three-minute span. The last attempt that was saved by Franken came at a cost as Daum was awaiting the rebound and was taken down inside the six-yard box leading to a penalty kick. Keo took and it finally broke through the door to tie the game 1-1. BC tried to end it in regulation as both Daum and Narby had good looks and had Franken beat but again the shots found the metal and not nylon. A long through in the final thirty seconds gave BC a chance and the Eagles shot the ball past Franken at the buzzer, but it was deemed just a hair after the whistle leading to the extra frames.
  • The Quakers offense came to life during the first overtime, but it was a shot from Daum that started the scoring opportunities. Franken made the save on Daum and a counterattack led to a shot for Guilford, but it missed wide. Narby fired a shot on target, but Franken stood tall yet again. Ach team had chances during the second overtime but neither broke through including a leaping save from Franken just before the horn to send the game to PKs.
  • Both teams scored on their opening chances during the shootout even after Franken got a piece of a Seagraves shot that still went into the net. Gaboury dug in and made a save on the second Quaker attempt to give the Eagles the edge. Both sides continued to score putting the pressure on Birkley on the fifth BC kick. The Ohio native lined up and sealed the deal with a shot to the far post to advance the Eagles to the ODAC Semifinals.
