Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls to Top-Seeded Marlins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's soccer team's season came to a close on Friday night in a 2-0 loss to top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan.

The Basics

Final Score: Virginia Wesleyan 2, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 12-6-1; Virginia Wesleyan 15-2-1

How it Happened
  • Virginia Wesleyan opened with early pressure and eventually forced a corner kick just shy of the 10-minute mark but did not register a shot. After a failed BC clear, the Marlins registered their first shot but missed wide of the frame. Two minutes later Carlee Gaboury made her first stop of the evening to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Marlins kept the foot on the gas nearing the midway point of the half before a turnover in the defense end gave BC a scoring chance. Alicia Keo fired a shot from point-blank range but missed just wide of the cage. VWU flipped the field and after a long throw in Alexis Miller flicked a shot on target and in to give the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Virginia Wesleyan looked to add to the lead with a pair of corner kicks but did not register a chance. Katelyn Seagraves had a scoring opportunity for Bridgewater in the closing stages of the opening half but missed wide of the crease.
  • After the BC back line blocked a shot, the Eagles got the offense going early in the second half. Skyler Daum got her head on a long throw from Lyric Birkley but a Rachel Quigley save nullified the chance. In the 55th minute Bridgewater was striking again on a dangerous free kick. The Eagles did not register an initial shot, but Anna Belan corralled the kick and sent it towards the goal where Quigley made the easy save.
  • Each team traded runs for the majority of the second half as both goalkeepers continued to showcase their skills. The Marlins set up with another long throw opportunity and capitalized as Adrianna Gunther found the back of the net to make it 2-0 with 10 minutes to go.
  • The Eagles pushed for offense, and it nearly paid off. A loose ball in front of the net gave Keo a look and she put the ball into the back of the net but a whistle from the official blew the play dead nullifying the score and giving the Eagles a corner kick with seven minutes left. Bridgewater did not generate a shot but had numerous chances down the stretch.

Match Notes

  • Alexis Miller led all players with six shots including three on target. Keo, Daum, Belan and Seagraves all registered shots for BC.
  • Gaboury tallied five saves while Quigley made a pair of stops.
