Field Hockey Holds on for Overtime Victory at Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Bridgewater College field hockey team needed some extra time, but walked away with a 3-2 double-overtime victory at Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Virginia Wesleyan 2 (2OT)
Records: Bridgewater 7-6, 5-2 ODAC; Virginia Wesleyan 6-10, 2-5 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bridgewater got right on the offensive side of things off the start as Daphne Daymude had a shot on goal just a minute into the contest that was saved. After a wide shot from the Marlins a few moments later, the game was a stalemate for a majority of the first quarter Daymude broke the deadlock with a goal at the 10:09 mark of the game to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which held until the end of the quarter.
  • The lead was doubled to two goals just over five minutes into the second quarter as Kylie Amberger found the back of the cage to make it 2-0 in favor of BC. VWU got a chance off a penalty corner that led to a shot on goal that was kicked away by Ashley Nau. On the other side of the field, the Eagles had another chance off a Meredyth Rankin penalty corner that went into Rylie Flick who's shot went wide. The Marlins battled to the end of the half getting another opportunity that was blocked before the end of the period with the Eagles still in front, 2-0, after 30 minutes.
  • The Marlins found the back of the cage in the third quarter as Ava Stauch got an assist from Shannon Gaffney to cut the deficit to 2-1 just over four minutes into second half. Both teams had a few chances through the rest of the third, but the Crimson & Gold remained in front 2-1 after the period came to an end.
  • Virginia Wesleyan went down field and scored to start the final quarter of regulation as Katherine Druiett knotted the game at 2-2 just a 1:41 into the fourth. Druiett had another chance that was kicked away by Nau to keep the tie before Flick fired a shot on cage that forced a save from the Marlins goalie, as well. Down the stretch, the Marlins got a penalty corner with less than a minute to go that led to a shot from Druiett but a clutch save by Nau sent the game to overtime - the third overtime game for the Eagles this season.
  • The first overtime saw little action as neither side garnered an attempt on goal or a penalty corner. The contest remained deadlocked at 2-2 after 70 minutes. A penalty corner early on in the second OT period gave the Eagles their first chance in the extra time when Flick's shot was saved after a Jade Buckles penalty corner. Amberger registered her second goal of the game and the game-winning goal at the 75:45 mark of the game to give BC another thrilling ODAC overtime victory.
