Field Hockey Blanks EMU for Fourth Straight Win

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College field hockey team controlled most of the game as the Eagles went on to defeat Eastern Mennonite, 2-0, at the Jopson Athletic Complex in ODAC action on Tuesday night.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 2, EMU 0
Records: Bridgewater 6-6, 4-2 ODAC; EMU 3-11, 0-6 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles controlled the ball in their offensive half of the field for most of the opening 15 minutes. Olivia DeWan got the ball in behind the EMU goalkeeper at the five-minute mark of the period, but Courtney Crawford put her stick down for a defensive save to keep the game scoreless. Less than four minutes later, Daphne Daymude rattled off three-straight shots that were all kicked away by Gracyn Arruda that eventually resulted in a penalty corner for BC. Another pair of shots - one from Kylie Amberger and one from Daymude - went in on target and were saved before the period came to a close with two more shots from Daymude that were blocked by the EMU defense. The Eagles forced eight saves in the opening quarter as the game went to the second period still scoreless.
  • The momentum stayed on the Eagles' side in the second as a shot from Rylie Flick forced a quick reaction from Arruda for another save that led to two more shots from Flick in a quick burst. The game went into the halftime break still tied at 0-0.
  • Bridgewater broke the scoreless tie just over a minute into the third quarter as Hassmilyn Delarosa recorded her first collegiate goal after a penalty corner from Meredyth Rankin was shot on goal by Flick, which allowed Delarosa to collect the rebound and score to make it 1-0 BC. The ball stayed in the offensive zone for the Eagles as the home side totaled 14 shots in the 15-minute frame with 10 of those going on cage. The Eagles led 1-0 after 45 minutes of play.
  • The Eagles backed up the third period with another attacking onslaught in the final period with 11 more shots coming off of the home team's sticks. Arruda stood tall in her cage until Daymude took a loose ball and put it in the back of the cage with just over 40 seconds left in the game to make the score 2-0, which held until the final horn.
GAME STATS
  • Delarosa registered her first goal in the Crimson & Gold and Daymude added her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the win.
  • Daymude paced the team with nine shots, while Amberger and Flick each had seven shots as well.
  • Madalyn Miller started in the cage for the Eagles and played 37 minutes before Harley Hoffman finished the last 22 minutes and change. Neither goalie faced a shot in the shutout victory.
