Eagles Outlast Maroons in Overtime

SALEM, Va. -- A pair of goals from Daphne Daymude and Emily Tyler helped the Bridgewater College field hockey team outlast Roanoke, 4-3, in an overtime thriller at Kerr Stadium in ODAC action on Wednesday evening.

THE BASICS
Final Score: Bridgewater 4, Roanoke 3 (Overtime)
Records: Bridgewater 4-6, 2-2 ODAC; Roanoke 5-5, 3-1 ODAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maroons started the game off fast as Grace Vernarelli was given a penalty stroke, which she scored to give Roanoke an early 1-0 lead just 3:22 into the game. The Eagles were quick in response as Daymude scored her third of the year less than three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Bridgewater threatened again just a few minutes later as it had back-to-back penalty corner attempts, but could only get off one shot by Lindsay Davis that went wide. On the other side of the field, Roanoke also was awarded a penalty corner that saw Hope Keller get a shot off that went wide but as the ball got back in play, Saige Bullock scored her sixth of the year off an assist from Vernarelli to give the home side a 2-1 edge at the 8:46 mark of the game. That score held until the finish of the opening 15 minutes.
  • Just two minutes into the second quarter, the Maroons extended their lead to 3-1 on a shot by Krista DeModna. Bridgewater responded with a shot of its own two minutes later by Olivia DeWan that forced the RC goalie to make a save. The Eagles had all the action for the rest of the quarter with a trio of penalty corners that led to a pair of shots, both by Amora Marchand, that were blocked away by the defense. The Maroons went into halftime holding on to the 3-1 edge.
  • Bridgewater had the first chance of the second half after a Meredyth Rankin penalty corner led to a shot from Kylie Amberger that was blocked away. The Maroons went the other way with a pair of shots that were both kicked aside by goalie Ashley Nau to preserve the score. The Eagles ended the 15 minute period with an offense burst that included two shots that both went wide. The game went into the last 15 minutes still seeing the home side holding on to a 3-1 lead.
  • The Eagles came out fast in the final period of regulation as Tyler got an assist from Amberger off a penalty corner from Rankin to find the back of the cage and trim the deficit to just one goal at 3-2 just a minute into the fourth. Bridgewater continued the pressure with a shot from Daymude a few minutes later that went wide. A green card was issued to Roanoke and Bridgewater knotted the game at 3-3 just 13 seconds later as Tyler scored her second of the game. Roanoke had a majority of the scoring chances for the rest of the fourth quarter as it held Bridgewater to no shots the rest of the way and fired off four shots of its own. The game remained tied at 3-3 as the fourth quarter clock ticked to zero.
  • As Bridgewater entered its second overtime in its last three games, the Eagles earned a penalty corner less than a minute in that led to a shot by Amberger that was kicked away. Another shot from Amberger rung off the post at the 61:27 mark of the game before Daymude found the back of the cage less than a minute later to give BC a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory and hand Roanoke its first ODAC loss of the season.
