Shelor and Scott Score in Win over Marymount

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men,s soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Marymount behind goals from Justin Scott and Matthew Shelor.

How It Happened
  • Marymount opened the match with early momentum. The Saints got off the first shot in the contest less than 90 seconds in as Charles Schweinefuss turned it away for BC.
  • Bridgewater increased the pressure late in the first half as Pearce Lowrey put a shot on net but Bayron Banegas made the save. BC earned a free kick off of a Saints foul two minutes later. Alex Martinez fired the kick into the box leading to a trio of BC shots on goal. Lestath Savage got the first off and was stopped by a Marymount defender. Marvin Perez put the deflection on goal and it was knocked in the air by Banegas. Justin Scott snuck in and headed the rebound into the net to put Bridgewater on the board 1-0.
  • In the 65th minute the Saints had a corner kick but did not take advantage. On the ensuing clear Matthew Shelor received the pass and dribbled a few times before firing a shot from well beyond the box and past Brian Cruz to put BC up 2-0.
  • Marymount had a big chance in the 83rd minute on a rush but the play was called back on an offsides.
  • The Saints put one last run together in the final minute as Shamai Arefaine rifled a shot from just outside the box past Schweinefuss to put his team on the board trailing 2-1.
Match Notes
  • Schweinefuss had a solid day in net stopping three of the four shots he faced. Banegas led the Saints in saves with three as well.
  • Savage led all players with four total shots. Leonardo Torres added three for Marymount.
  • Bridgewater out shot Marymount 15-7 including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • BC also held an 8-1 adavantage in corner kicks.
  • Scott's goal was the first of his career after not seeing action in 2021.
