Softball Takes Down No. 6 Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team took sole possession of first place in the ODAC with a doubleheader split at No. 6 Randolph-Macon. 

Game One 

The Basics 

  • Final Score - Bridgewater 1, No. 6 Randolph-Macon 9 (5 Innings) 

  • Records - Bridgewater (17-12, 7-2 ODAC), No. 6 Randolph-Macon (22-4, 7-2 ODAC) 

How It Happened 

  • With two outs on the board in the top of the first, Sarah Wimer hit her ODAC-leading ninth home run of the season to left field to give the Eagles an early 1-0 edge. Randolph-Macon responded in the bottom of the half inning with a two RBI homer to take the 2-1 edge 

  • Samantha Martin only faced three batters in the bottom of the second before Kaitlyn Tirona started the third inning with the only other Bridgewater hit of the contest, a single to second base. The Randolph-Macon offense was difficult to stop, totaling 14 hits in just five innings as the nationally ranked Yellow Jackets took the contest early 

Match Notes 

  • Wimer and Tirona recorded the only hits for Bridgewater while Avery Pinder earned another sacrifice bunt on the year  

  • Martin pitched two innings, allowing eight hits. Brantley Swift pitched the remaining two innings, allowing six hits 

Game Two 

The Basics 

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 12, No. 6 Randolph-Macon 1 (6 Innings) 

  • Records: Bridgewater (18-12, 8-2 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (22-5, 7-3 ODAC) 

How It Happened 

  • After the Yellow Jackets scored early in the bottom of the first, Jazmyne Smith notched the Eagles first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the top of the second. Back-to-back ground outs from Kathryn Thomas and Tirona gave Smith the path to second and home to even the game at 1-1 

  • Bridgewater exploded for six runs in the top of the third all starting with a single from Brooklynn Fridley. Wimer, Smith, Thomas, Tirona, Peyton Gregory and Fridley all recorded an RBI as the entire order saw the plate during the inning. Emma Killion and the Eagle defense kept the momentum in favor of the Eagles in bottom half of the inning by retiring three straight batters to keep the 7-1 advantage 

  • Thomas singled up the middle to start the fourth before crossing home on a Tirona RBI double down the left field line to give Bridgewater the 8-1 lead. Wimer and Fridley both hit doubles in the top of the sixth to help build the commanding Eagle lead to 12-1 and seal the victory in six innings 

Match Notes 

  • Eight Eagles recorded at least one hit for a whopping 16 total team hits. Smith, Tirona and Fridley led the charge with three each 

  • Tirona also contributed three RBI with Wimer, Gregory, Thomas and Fridley adding two 

  • Killion pitched a complete game, allowing three hits from the 25 Yellow Jackets she faced. The sophomore also threw three strikeouts 

Up Next 

  • The Eagles will return home to Fulk Field tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader date with Ferrum. Action is set for 1:00 p.m. 

  • The team will honor its senior class of Pinder, Torie Shifflett, Wimer, Tirona and Melody White before the 1:00 p.m. contest
