No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan Sweeps Softball

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan Saturday at Fulk Field to close out the ODAC regular season. The team now waits for conference play to conclude around the league to its their seeding for next weekend's ODAC Championship.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 0, No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan 4
  • Records: Bridgewater (21-16, 11-6 ODAC), No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan (28-10, 11-6 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Ariana Rolle started the contest with a bunt for the Marlins before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Maria Weddle hit a triple to right field on the next at-bat to send Rolle home for an early 1-0 lead. The Marlins added to their lead on the next at-bat when Weddle crossed home for the 2-0 edge
  • Brooklynn Fridley knocked in a double to left field in the bottom of inning but was left stranded at second. Innings two and three were three up three down frames for both teams as the score remained 2-0 Marlins
  • Back-to-back singles up the middle from Jazmyne Smith and Kaitlyn Tirona brought Morgan Lucas to the plate. The rookie hit a deep ball to center field, just a foot away from being out of the park
  • Virginia Wesleyan added another run on a RBI single to right field in the top of the fifth and earned their final tally of the day in the top of the seventh on a Bridgewater error to earn the 4-0 victory

Game Notes

  • Fridley, Smith, Tirona and Lucas each recorded a hit for Bridgewater
  • Brantley Swift tossed a complete game from the circle, allowing six hits and three earned runs

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 2, No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan 6
  • Records: Bridgewater (21-17, 11-7 ODAC), No. 15 Virginia Wesleyan (29-10, 12-6 ODAC)

How It Happened 

  • Avery Pinder led off the bottom of the first with a single to the pitcher. Brooklynn Fridley joined her on the bases after a Marlins throwing error to give Torie Shifflett runners on the corners. Shifflett hit a single to pitcher to give Pinder the path home before distracting the Marlin's infield on a rundown situation to give Fridley ample time to come home for the 2-0 edge
  • The Marlins tied to game in the top the second on a two RBI single to right center from Haleigh Settle. The visitors added to their lead with two more RBI singles in the top of the third from Caitlyn Myers and Karlee Fretz
  • Samantha Martin, Fridley and Kathryn Thomas all hit singles in the middle frame of the contest but the Eagles struggled to find offense beyond that. The Marlins sealed the win in the top of the seventh with a two RBI home run from Julia Sinnett

Match Notes

  • Fridley had a game-high two hits followed by Pinder, Shifflett, Sarah Wimer and Martin with one each
  • Shifflett was responsible for the lone Bridgewater RBI of the day
  • Emma Killion took the loss from the circle, throwing three innings while allowing seven hits and four earned run. Martin tossed the remainder of the game, allowing three hits and two earned runs

  • Bridgewater will conclude the regular season tomorrow, April 24 when they welcome non-conference opponent Hood to Fulk Field. Doubleheader action is set for 1:00 p.m.
