Seven-Run Ninth Inning Secures Softball Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINCHESTER, Va. - Needing extra innings in both contests, the Bridgewater College softball team poured on seven runs in the ninth inning of game two to leave Shenandoah with an ODAC doubleheader split.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 3, Shenandoah 4 (8 innings)
  • Records: Bridgewater (20-15, 10-5 ODAC), Shenandoah (11-18, 6-9 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The Hornets scored early in the bottom of the first with no outs on a two RBI single to take a 2-0 edge. Emma Killion earned three consecutive outs after the runs with help from a rocket throw by Avery Pinder in center field to assist Sarah Wimer in tagging out the runner at home plate
  • Shenandoah walked lead-off hitter Torie Shifflett in the third frame and lost sight of her as she proceeded to steal second base. A Wimer RBI single up the middle gave Shifflett the path home to cut the deficit to one run
  • A Shenandoah error allowed Jazmyne Smith to find first base in the top of the sixth. The designated player was the victor of two back-to-back fielder's choices and became the tying run after a Morgan Lucas RBI single
  • Neither team could produce a run in remainder of the seven regulation innings, forcing an extra innings international tie breaker. Pinch runner Peyton Gregory made her way from second to home on two wild pitches to give Bridgewater a 3-2 lead after the top of the eighth. Shenandoah had two hits to bring in two runs in the bottom half of the frame to secure the victory

Match Notes

  • Wimer led the Eagles with two hits followed by Pinder, Lucas and Hannah Mahan with one each. Wimer and Lucas also posted a RBI each
  • Four different Eagles stole a base including Pinder, who currently ranks third in the league with 17 on the season
  • Killion earned the loss, pitching two innings and allowing one earned run. Samantha Martin pitched the remainder of the contest, allowing seven hits and two earned runs

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 10, Shenandoah 4 (8 innings)
  • Records: Bridgewater (21-15, 11-5 ODAC), Shenandoah (11-19, 6-10 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Mahan hit a single through the left side the start game two for Bridgewater. The rookie shortstop gave the Eagles a early 1-0 edge when she crossed home on a Wimer RBI single to right field
  • The Hornets added runs in the bottom of the first and second frames to take a 2-1 advantage before Smith sent Pinder home on a RBI single to right center to tie the game at 2-2
  • Mahan, Wimer and Smith teamed up for a critical double play in the bottom of the fourth to prevent Shenandoah from taking back the lead. Wimer and Shifflett posted hits in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, but neither team could add another run to the board to push the second international tie breaker of the day
  • Smith sent a double to left field to start the eighth frame, sending Mahan home to take the 3-2 edge. Shenandoah responded, successfully advancing the runner on a sacrifice bunt to tie the game yet again at 3-3
  • Kathryn Thomas, Pinder, Shifflett, Smith, Wimer, Lucas and Kaitlyn Tirona all had hits in the ninth for a monstrous seven-run inning to give Bridgewater a 10-3 lead. The Hornets added another run in the bottom half of the frame but could not match the Eagles bats

Match Notes

  • Smith and Wimer had three hits each followed by Shifflett and Pinder with two each. Wimer added three RBI to increase her ODAC-leading season total to 44
  • Smith, Wimer and Tirona all hit doubles as a part of Bridgewater's 13 total hits and ten RBI
  • Brantley Swift earned her fifth win of the year, pitching a complete game and allowing two earned runs

Up Next

  • Bridgewater will take an extended break from competition before hosting defending national champions No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, April 23. Doubleheader action is set for 1:00 p.m.
