Eagles Take One From No. 12 Roanoke

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team split with No. 12 Roanoke on Wednesday at Fulk Field.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 4, Roanoke 5
  • Records: Bridgewater (19-14, 9-4 ODAC), Roanoke (21-8, 7-4 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • Torie Shifflett found herself on first base after a Maroon error and advanced to second on a wild pitch to start the bottom of the first for Bridgewater. Shifflett proceeded to take third on a single from Avery Pinder and crossed home for the 1-0 lead on another Roanoke error. Pinder would then come home on a Jazmyne Smith single for the 2-0 edge. Kaitlyn Tirona hit a big double to centerfield but was left stranded to end the inning
  • The Maroons piled on five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Smith brought the Eagles one run closer to the bottom of the third on a double to left center to cross Wimer who reached the bases on an error
  • Wimer tied the single season home run record in the top of the sixth with an inside-the-park home run to make it 5-4. The Eagles had an opportunity in the remainder of the sixth but left two runners on base to end the inning

Match Notes

  • Smith and Tirona each recorded two hits with Smith notching two RBI
  • Brantley Swift pitched two innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Savannah Painter finished the contest, throwing five innings and allowing six hits with no runs

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 9, Roanoke 0 (5 Innings)
  • Records: Bridgewater (20-14, 10-4 ODAC), Roanoke (21-9, 7-5 ODAC)

How It Happened

  • The Eagles bats came alive early in the bottom of the first when Shifflett started the frame with a single to left field. The Maroons allowed a Hannah Mahan single to third and walked Wimer to load the bases for clean up hitter Smith. The sophomore delivered, scoring Shifflett and Mahan on a two RBI single to left field for the 2-0 advantage. Kathryn Thomas would send Wimer home two at-bats later an RBI single to left field to make it 3-0 Bridgewater
  • Bridgewater's defense shined in the top of second. Morgan Lucas caught a key line drive to first base to not only get the batter out but the runner who took an early lead to second. Mahan ended the inning with a heroic catch in the dirt at shortstop
  • Brooklynn Fridley, Pinder and Shifflett posted three singles in a row to start the bottom of the second for Bridgewater. Mahan and Wimer both posted RBIs to make it 5-0 Eagles.
  • Tirona sent a deep ball to left field for her second home run of the season to give Bridgewater a 6-0 lead. Thomas hit a double to left center immediately following the homer and scored on another double by Fridley for the 7-0 lead at the end of three. The Eagles tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth on RBIs from Smith and Thomas to seal the 9-0 victory in just five innings

Match Notes

  • Shifflett had a game-high three hits followed by Mahan, Tirona, Thomas and Fridley with two each. Smith contributed three RBI with Thomas bringing in two
  • Emma Killion earned her sixth win of the season, tossing a complete game. The sophomore allowed five hits and no runs

Up Next

  • The Eagles will travel to Shenandoah on Saturday, April 16 for their final road ODAC doubleheader of the season. Action is set for 1:00 p.m.
