Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team split with the visiting Panthers of Ferrum College on Senior Day at Fulk Field to remain atop the ODAC standings. The team honored seniors Avery Pinder, Torie Shifflett, Sarah Wimer, Kaitlyn Tirona and Melody White prior to start of competition.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 0, Ferrum 2
  • Records: Bridgewater (18-13, 8-3), Ferrum (17-8, 7-2)

How It Happened

  • The Panthers hit two singles to start the contest in the top of the first and crossed both runners home on a two RBI double to left center to take an early 2-0 edge. Bridgewater was able to leave a runner stranded at the end of the first with ground to make-up
  • Shifflett posted the first Eagle hit of the day with a single to left field in the bottom of third while Jazmyne Smith added the second on a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth. Smith advanced to second after the Panthers walked Kathryn Thomas to put two runners on base for the first time in the contest but the Eagles could not send either runner home
  • Hannah Mahan made back-to-back throws to Wimer behind the plate to prevent two Ferrum runs from scoring in the top of the fifth. Peyton Gregory was the only Eagle able to reach first for the remainder of the contest after she walked in the fifth and seventh as Ferrum held on for the 2-0 victory

Match Notes

  • Shifflet and Smith both contributed a hit for the Eagles
  • Emma Killion tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits
  • The win briefly pushed Ferrum into first place in the contest over the Eagles who sat in third after the loss

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 12, Ferrum 0 (5 Innings)
  • Records: Bridgewater (19-13, 9-3), Ferrum (17-9, 7-3)

How It Happened

  • After a three up three down bottom of the first for the Eagles, Kaitlyn Tirona hit a single to right center in the top of the second to set-up a dominant inning for Bridgewater. Brooklynn Fridley stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded after Hannah Mahan was hit by a pitch and Gregory reached on a Panther error. The left fielder delivered, sending a deep ball to right center for a three RBI triple to give Bridgewater a 3-0 edge. Fridley would cross after she was left unattended as the Panthers attempted to catch Shifflett in a run down from first to second to make it 4-0 Eagles
  • Wimer delivered her ODAC-leading tenth homer of the season to lead-off the third inning. Smith followed Wimer's at-bat up with a double to left field and crossed home on a Tirona RBI single down the left field line for the 6-0 lead
  • With the bases loaded, Ferrum walked Morgan Lucas for the Eagles seventh run of the day before Mahan added another RBI with a single to third base. The highlight of the afternoon came when pinch hitter White delivered a three RBI homer to right field to give Bridgewater a commanding 12-0 edge, enough to end the game in five innings

Match Notes

  • White's homer was the first hit of her career. It came in a storybook fashion as a pinch hitter on Senior Day for the infielder from Culpepper
  • Smith, Tirona and Fridley all posted two hits followed by Wimer, Mahan and White with one each to make-up the nine Bridgewater hits in the contest
  • White and Fridley both posted three RBI, career-highs for both Eagles
  • Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing three hits in 22 batters faced. The junior recorded two strikeouts
  • With the win, the Eagles moved back into a tie for first place in the ODAC with No. 6 Randolph-Macon

Up Next

  • Bridgewater returns to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they host No. 10 Roanoke at Fulk Field. Doubleheader action is set for 3:00 p.m.
