Softball Walks Off Twice Against Randolph

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Bridgewater College softball team earned walk-off victories in each game of its ODAC opener doubleheader with Randolph at Fulk Field, taking game one 5-4 and game two 8-7.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 5, Randolph 4
  • Records: Bridgewater 11-10, 1-0 ODAC, Randolph 6-14, 0-1 ODAC

How It Happened

  • After a fast-paced first two innings, the Wild Cats got the scoring going in the top of the third frame with a pair of runs off a single up the middle by Allison Jarrett, 2-0.
  • The Eagles responded in the home half of the frame with a four-spot. Hannah Mahan plated Avery Pinder with a single to left-center field before Jazmyne Smith drove in Mahan, 2-2. Sarah Wimer pushed the game to 4-2 on her seventh home run of the season on the next at-bat.
  • RC tied up the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Bridgewater threatened in the bottom of the frame, but stranded a runner in scoring position.
  • The WildCats went down in order in the final inning setting the stage for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh frame.
  • Mahan started off the home side with a single up the middle before easily taking second on a stolen base. Smith followed a few pitches later with an RBI double to the fence in left field after sending the pitch over the head of the outfielder allowing Mahan to score and give the Eagles a win in walk-off fashion.

Match Notes

  • Mahan and Kathryn Thomas each went 2 for 3 at the dish, while Smith went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. 
  • Mahan and Pinder each swiped a pair of bases.
  • Samantha Martin tossed a complete game scattering 10 hits and yielding four runs (three earned). She struck out five batters and did not allow a walk. She earned her fifth win of the season to move to 5-2.
  • Paige Scruggs was strapped with the loss after entering in the third inning in relief and allowing just one run in 3.2 innings in the circle. Jenna St. John was chased from her start after 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 8, Randolph 7
  • Records: Bridgewater 12-10, 2-0 ODAC, Randolph 6-15, 0-2 ODAC

How It Happened

  • The WildCat offense jumped ahead to start the second half of the twinbill as Jarrett drove in two in the first to give RC a 2-0 advantage. Randolph added to the lead with another run in the second on a close bunt play at first base and scored two more in the third with a pair of unearned runs.
  • RC scored one more in the fourth on a sac fly to take a 6-0 lead.
  • The Eagles' bats came alive in the fifth inning as Smith singled to center field to drive in Torie Shifflett. Wimer doubled home Smith and Thomas stroked an RBI single to score Wimer to cut the lead down to 6-3. 
  • Brookflyn Fridley opened the bottom of the sixth with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, 6-4.
  • Pinder singled with one out and Shifflett drew a walk to put two runners on. After a strikeout, Smith stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead and its first lead of game two.
  • The Wild Cats responded in the top of the seventh but scoring a run on a one-out RBI double into the left field gap, 7-7. Martin, who entered to pitch at the beginning of the inning, enduced a pop up and a ground out to third to end the frame tied up.
  • Once again hitting in a tie game in the final half inning, the Eagles started off with a single by Annaliese Franklin who then exited as Payton Gregory came in to run. Fridley lasered a pitch into center that was misplayed by the center fielder enabling Gregory to come all the way from first to score and give the Eagles another walk-off vicory to complete the doubleheader sweep. 

Match Notes

  • Smith went 2 for 4 with four RBI to lead the way in game 2.
  • Fridley went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Wimer added another pair of hits for the day, while Shifflett scored twice.
  • Emma Killion started in the circle, but went 3.0 innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on four hits. Savannah Painter tossed 1.0 innings and scattered four hits with one run, while Kearston Bruce came in for 2.0 innings of work giving up just two hits with a strikeout.
  • Martin returned to the game in the seventh to get her second win of the day and move to 6-2 on the season.
  • Danielle Shannon pitched 4.2 innings in the start and allowed three runs on seven hits, while Emily Morris was saddled with the loss (1-2) after pitching 1.1 innings in relief giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits.

Up Next

  • Bridgewater will travel to Lynchburg tomorrow, March 27, for another ODAC doubleheader. The twinbill is set to begin at 1:30 pm.
