Softball Takes Down Greensboro in Extra Innings

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College softball team split a doubleheader with Greensboro on Saturday, picking up their win in an exciting eight innings.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 4, Greensboro, 1
  • Records: Bridgewater (8-5), Greensboro (9-4)

How It Happened

  • Greensboro scored first in the bottom of the first on a RBI double to take an early 1-0 advantage. The Eagles struggled in innings two and three, going three up three down in both frames. Jazmyne Smith recorded the first Eagle hit of the day on a double in the fourth innings but could not capitalize in the inning
  • Needing offensive momentum, Torie Shifflett started the sixth inning with a single before Hannah Mahan reached on an error by the Pride. With two on base, Sarah Wimer hit a RBI single to send Shifflett home and tie the game. 
  • Neither team was able to produce a run in the seventh inning to push extra innings and place a speedy Avery Pinder on second base to start the eighth. Pinder was able to reach third on a ground out from Shifflett and score after a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Smith followed it up with a single before Sarah Wimer added the insurance run with a two RBI home run to make it 4-1 Bridgewater. The Bridgewater defense did not allow the Pride to score in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory

Match Notes

  • Wimer added to her ODAC leading RBI mark with three more in the game to reach 21 on the year. Her homer was her fifth of the season and also leads the conference
  • Smith notched two hits followed by Shifflett and Kaitlyn Tirona with one each
  • Samantha Martin earned her fourth win of the season from the circle, allowing five hits while striking out two

Game Two

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 4, Greensboro 6
  • Records: Bridgewater (8-6), Greensboro (10-4)

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning, Sarah Wimer started the second with a single before crossing home on an Annaliese Franklin single to give BC a 1-0 edge. Greensboro responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of her own to tie it at 1-1
  • The Eagles quickly regained the lead in the third on a Smith single to make it 2-1. Bridgewater picked up a key double play in the bottom of the fourth to hold the Pride in the inning. In what was becoming a back-and-forth affair, the Pride tied the game again the bottom of the fifth on a ground out RBI to second base to make it 2-2
  • Now in the sixth inning, Peyton Gregory reached first on a Greensboro error, giving way for pinch runners Brooklynn Fridley and Kathryn Thomas to cross home and give Bridgewater a 4-2 edge. Greensboro responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead. Wimer hit a single in the seventh to keep BC alive but the Eagles could not capitalize, falling 6-4

Match Notes

  • Wimer again paced Bridgewater with two hits while Shifflett, Mahan, Smith, Tirona and Franklin all had one
  • Mahan stole two bases along with Smith and Thomas who each took one
  • Emma Killion represented the Eagles from the circle, allowing 12 hits and three earned runs

Up Next

  • Bridgewater will return to action tomorrow, March 20 when they welcome Pfeiffer to Fulk Field for a doubleheader. Action is set for 1:00 p.m.
