Eagles Record 20 Total Hits in Sweep of Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team totaled 20 hits on the day in a doubleheader sweep of Mary Washington in non-conference play.

Game One

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 5. Mary Washington 1
  • Records: Bridgewater (4-5). Mary Washington (7-7)

How It Happened

  • After being walked to start the game, Torie Shifflett was able to advance to second on a Jazmyne Smith hit directly to the Mary Washington pitcher. She would cross home plate on the next at-bat when Sarah Wimer hit an RBI single to center field for the early 1-0 lead
  • Samantha Martin went three up three down to start the game from the circle before the Eagles would score again in the top of the second on an Avery Pinder double down the left field line to bring Kristen Dungee home for the 2-0 edge
  • Mary Washington struck for the first time in the bottom of fourth with a home run to left field to come within one run. With runners on second and third, Martin was able to limit Mary Washington to just the homer in the fourth frame with a strikeout for the third out of the inning to leave the runners stranded
  • Bridgewater exploded for three runs in the fifth inning led off by a Pinder single to third. The senior would advance to second on a ground out from Shifflett and steal third before crossing home on a Hannah Mahan RBI bunt. Mahan proceeded to steal both second and third base before scoring run number four for the Eagles on a Smith RBI single to center field. Wimer notched her second RBI of the game later in the fifth to cross Smith for the 5-1 lead
  • Mary Washington would record two more hits in the remainder of the game with Martin facing no more than four batters an inning to secure her second win of the season

Match Notes

  • Wimer went 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs while Pinder went 2-3 with an RBI
  • Mahan, Smith and Dungee all recorded a hit with Mahan and Smith adding an RBI each
  • Mahan and Pinder both stole two bases
  • Martin pitched a complete game, facing 28 batters with three strikeouts and allowing four hits

  • Final Score: Bridgewater 11, Mary Washington 2
  • Records: Bridgewater (5-5), Mary Washington (7-8)

How It Happened

  • Mary Washington hit their second home run of the day in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The home team would add another run later in the inning with an RBI single to make it 2-0
  • Bridgewater responded in the top of the second starting with a Morgan Lucas double to begin the frame. With Peyton Gregory taking over as a pinch runner, Kaitlyn Tirona hit an RBI double to left field to give Gregory the path to home to cut the deficit to one run
  • Neither Eagle squad was able to score in the third or fourth innings. The top of the fifth was highlighted by doubles from Shifflett and Wimer to add two more runs to the board and allow Bridgewater to take their first lead of the game at 3-2
  • Pinder, Shifflett. Smith, Lucas and Tirona all recorded RBIs in the sixth inning as Bridgewater tacked on five more runs for an 8-2 edge. After a three up three down bottom of the sixth for Brantley Swift, Annaliese Franklin started the top of the seventh with a single to center field. The next two batters picked up outs one and two for BC before Shifflett hit another RBI single to center field for the 9-2 edge
  • With two outs on the board, Bridgewater was able to add two more runs in the inning for a staggering 11-2 lead. Swift only faced three batters in the bottom of the inning, ending the game with a strikeout

Match Notes

  • Bridgewater recorded 12 hits and 10 RBIs compared to Mary Washington's three hits and two RBIs
  • Shifflett led BC with three hits and two RBIs followed by Wimer with two hits and two RBIs
  • Swift pitched a complete game for her second win of the year, allowing three hits while posting five strikeouts in facing 27 batters

  • Bridgewater will travel to future ODAC rival Averett on Sunday for a doubleheader with Cougars. Action is set for 1:00 p.m.
