SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: The Panthers picked up their first win of the season a week ago against Guilford, 31-17. Ferrum opened up a 17-points lead in the second quarter before the Quakers finally got on the board as FC led 17-7 at the break. Guilford was able to tie the game in the third quarter to end a stretch of 17-unanswered points, but the Panthers scored twice in the final 15 minutes to walk away with a 14-point victory. The Panthers utilized nearly 10 minutes of game clock on just two drives that ended in rushing touchdowns by Josh Luckett to prevail on the road.Â
FERRUM HEAD COACH: Cleive Adams was named the head coach of the Ferrum football team during the 2020-21 season that was played in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adams previously spent six years as the head coach of fellow ODAC institution, Averett, where he compiled 30 victories over the six seasons. Adams returned to Ferrum where he previously coached on a pair of separate stints and also played at Ferrum in the 1980s reaching the NCAA Division III semifinals two times. He eventually graduated from the College in 2002 with a degree in recreation and leisure, and was named to the institution's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019.Â
LAST MEETING: Ferrum walked away with a 14-10 victory in last season's meeting between the two teams. There was one score between each side in each quarter of the game as the Eagles kicked a field goal in the first, scored a touchdown in the second, the Panthers scored a touchdown in the third and in the fourth as they scored 14-unanswered to come back after being down 10-0 at half. It was FC's first win in the series since 2011.
ALL-TIME SERIES: Today is the 20th all-time meeting between the two schools despite the relative close distance from each other. The first contest came in 1986 with Ferrum recording a 42-14 victory. Despite trailing in the all-time series, Bridgewater has gotten the best of Ferrum since the Panthers joined the ODAC a few years ago. Brigdweater has won five of the last seven meetings, including four straight from 2013-2020.Â
BALL!: The Bridgewater College football team currently leads all of Division III in fumble recoveries with 12 through the season's first seven games. In turn, the Eagles have only lost one fumble on the year, which came a few weeks ago against Shenandoah. The team's turnover margin is second in the nation at 2.29, which fell from 2.30 last week but still ranks among the best across all divisions of NCAA college football.
IT'S A FAKE: The Bridgewater College special teams unit came up big with a fake PAT late in the win against Averett last week. The team was in the lead but after a defensive penalty moved the ball closer to the goaline, BC decided to deploy a fake kick, which ended in
Freddie Watkins finding
Kyle Beck open in the end zone for a successful two-point conversion.
WE WANT MOORE: Junior defensive back
Aaron Moore is in the midst of a career season as he ranks fifth in the ODAC with 53 tackles through the first half of the season. Moore has once been named ODAC Defensive Player of the Week and two times earned D3football.com National Team of the Week honors for his play. The native of Roanoke, Virginia, also boasts 4.0 TFL, two fumble recoveries, three interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown against Gettysburg, and has also broken up four passes, which is the second most on the Eagles. His average of 6.1 solo tackles per game ranks him inside the top 15 in the nation.
VERY SPECIAL TEAMS: Bridgewater College punter
Garrett Graves leads the ODAC and ranks among the top 10 across the nation in punting with an average kick of 42.2 yards. He launched a 70-yard punt earlier this season against N.C. Wesleyan that ranks as one of the longest punts in the team's history. The preseason first team All-American has dropped 13 of his 26 punts inside the 20 yard line and has just two touchbacks. On the other side of the ball, sophomore kicker
Jackson Hendren is etching his name as one of the top placekickers in Division III with a stellar campaign to this point. Hendren  leads the ODAc with eight field goals, including a 47-yarder that came against Shenandoah. That kick is tied for the fourth longest field goal in team history, and is the longest in the ODAC this season. He is also 19-for-21 on extra points, which puts him in third in the ODAC with 43 points on the year.
OTHER BRIDGEWATER TEAMS IN ACTION: The ODAC Women's Soccer regular season championship is on the line as the Eagles remain in first place on the final day of the regular season. BC takes on Randolph and looks to hold off Washington and Lee for the top spot. Men's soccer opens the ODAC Tournament at the No. 4 seed, Roanoke, while nationally-ranked equestrian team takes on Dartmouth. The cross country teams take part in the ODAC Championship races and the field hockey team faces off with No. 18 Washington and Lee to finish out the 2022 regular season slate.Â
