Men's Soccer Downs Royals

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's soccer team defeated cross-town rival Eastern Mennonite 1-0 on Wednesday night.

How It Happened
  • BC had a chance 39 seconds in as Matthew Shelor took a shot but it was blocked.by an EMU defender. 
  • Trevon Phillips had a chance in the 15th minute getting a shot off but found the post. The rebound fell to his feet but he just missed the frame.
  • Eastern Mennonite put together a run in the opening minutes of the second half. Back-to-back Royals shots missed the frame but the third found the hands of Charles Schweinefuss for a save. 
  • In the 54th minute the scoreless tie was broken. Eric Ramirez laid a pass on for Alex Martinez. Martinez and Phillips darted towards the box and Martniez rifled it home to put BC in front 1-0.
  • Niklas Hatchett had a chance in the closing stages to extend the lead but his shot was denied by Andrew Arledge.
Match Notes
  • Phillips led all players wih three shots including one on goal. 
  • Schweinefuss made three stops in the win. Arledge made two saves as he only faced three shots on net. 
  • Bridgewater held a 14-9 advantage in shots, but both teams were knotted at three shots on goal each.
  • Eastern Mennonite held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks including two in the second half.
  • Bridgewater has now secured the most wins in a season since 2018. In that season the Eagles reached the conference championship match against Washington and Lee.
