Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Eagles Fall to Yellow Jackets

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater men's soccer team saw its four-game win streak come to an end in a 2-1 loss to Randolph-Macon on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics

Final Score: Randolph-Macon 2, Bridgewater 1
Records: Bridgewater 8-3-2 (4-2-0 ODAC); Randolph-Macon 6-4-3 (2-3-2 ODAC)

How It Happened
  • The Yellow Jackets had lots of early chances, including a Dylan Matheny shot within the first minute that was saved by Charles Schweinefuss. Bridgewater got its first shot off just outside of the fifth minute as Thomas Vik got a look but his shot was denied by Zach Fontenot.
  • Randolph-Macon dominated the opening half outshooting BC 13-3. The Eagles did not get a corner kick in the first half either while the Yellow Jackets had seven. Schweinefuss stood tall in his crease as he and the BC back line denied all of the R-MC chances in the opening frame.
  • The opening few minutes saw a completely different story with BC applying much of the pressure as Eric Ramirez but a shot could not get on frame. In the 51st minute the Yellow Jackets got their first opportunity of the half with a shot on net saved by Schweinefuss. R-MC put another run together and sent a cross towards the BC back line and deflected off of a defender and into the goal for a Yellow Jacket goal.
  • The intensity ramped up from that point on with four BC shots in a two minute span but none found the back of the net. Yellow cards were handed out to both squads regularly leading to more physicality. In the 71st minute Ramirez made a run to the goal but was tripped up in the box leading to a penalty kick for BC. Trevon Phillips buried his shot in the bottom left corner of the net to knot the game, 1-1.
  • In the 77th minute, Matheny took matters into his own hands as he rifled a shot from well outside the box that made its way to the back of the net for a goal to give Randolph-Macon a 2-1 lead.
  • Bridgewater continued the pressure getting three shots off in the final minutes but only one on target from David Quintanilla. In the final minute BC made a run but the pass from Phillips was just off the mark going out of play for a goal kick to seal the deal for the Yellow Jackets.
Match Notes
  • Chazz Jones led all players with five shots. Phillips led BC with four of his own.
  • Schweinefuss made eight saves for Bridgewater in goal. Fontenot made five saves for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Randolph-Macon out shot Bridgewater 25-14 including a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Despite Randolph-Macon having a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks at the break the Eagles had two corner kicks in the second half but came up empty off of both.
  • Today snapped two different streaks. The win for the Yellow Jackets snapped a four game skid and the loss stops a four game winning streak for the Eagles.
