Eagles Set Scoring Records in 15-0 Rout

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team set team and individual records in a 15-0 rout of Meredith on the Jopson turf.

Freshman Emily Tyler tied a program single game mark with six goals, equaling a record set all the way back on November 2, 1957 by Mary Kitty Garber vs. Lynchburg. Her six goals and 14 points both also rank in the top-10 all-time in the NCAA Division III era. Bridgewater's 15 goals was the most ever scored in a contest by the Eagles.

Claire Ashley (three goals, two assists) and Caroline Quigley (two goals, three assists) each had a hand in five different tallies on the day.

Tyler would score Bridgewater's first two goals of the season within the opening three minutes of a contest where the Eagles would ultimately hold a 55-0 advantage in shots.

BC took the lead just 27 seconds in. Quigley broke right through the Meredith line; her pass into the goalmouth was stopped by a defender but Tyler was first to it and finished the chance off.

Bridgewater almost scored again just over a minute in, but a succession of jam attempts along the goalline wouldn't go through. The Eagles kept the pressure on and Tyler would soon record her second of the opening period off an assist from Taylor Wood.

Tyler could have had a hat trick in the opening six minutes, with Meredith goalie Shae-Lynn Henderson (19 first half saves) made a tough sliding stop.

Ashley made it 3-0 in the opening period, and Tyler completed her hat trick with a tip-in from Quigley. Another freshman, Daphne Daymude, also scored in the first quarter to make it 5-0 after 15 minutes played.

Meredith withstood an early second quarter flurry with a pair of defensive saves, but it didn't take long for Bridgewater to score again as Ashley ripped a shot off another Quigley assist. The senior soon had a hat trick with another outside shot to make it seven.

A nice combination play gave the Eagles an 8-0 first half lead, with Bekah Mercer finishing off the pass from Meghan Bailey.

Quigley lifted a shot inside the near post for a 9-0 scoreline in the third quarter. Bridgewater hit double digits on Tyler's tap-in, and Tyler added her fifth of the game to make it 11-0 after another easy finish.

Quigley and Wood scored just 24 seconds apart to make it 13-0, and Tyler's record-tying goal came just before the end of the third quarter.

Tyler nearly added another point to her record totals, but an apparent fourth quarter scoring play set up by the rookie was waved off.

Bridgewater (1-2) will travel to Juniata on Friday night.
