Softball Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team fell to the visiting No. 14 Christopher Newport Captains in the squad's final tune-up before the ODAC Tournament.

Game One: Bridgewater 1, CNU 5

The Captains posted their first run in the top of first on an Eagle error. Katrina Martin hit a single to right center in the bottom of the second for the Eagles first chance of the game. The senior advanced to second on a Kaitlyn Tirona sacrifice bunt. Riley Molineaux joined Martin on the bases after a Captain error, but Bridgewater could not capitalize with two outs left to send Martin or Molineaux home.

CNU added two more in the third on a homer and a RBI single to left field along with a run in the fourth on a RBI double to right center. Avery Pinder made an impressive catch deep on the warning track to leave a Captain stranded and end the fourth inning down 5-0.

Bridgewater earned their sole run of the game on a Sarah Wimer RBI single to right field to send Torie Shifflett home.

Despite the run deficit, both teams recorded six hits each. Shifflett had a team and game-high two hits for the Eagles. Kathryn Thomas took the loss from the circle, pitching three innings and allowing two earned runs. Savannah Painter saw her first collegiate action, pitching two innings. Brantley Swift pitched the remaining frame for Bridgewater.

Game Two: Bridgewater 0, CNU 6

The Eagle bats fell quiet in the second game with Pinder recording the squad's only two hits. Bridgewater had their best chance to add a run in the bottom of the seventh with Emma Killion and Pinder on base. Shifflett hit a deep fly ball that had potential to go the distance but was ultimately caught by the centerfielder to end the game.

17 Eagles saw time during the game. Keirsten Kennedy pitched five innings, allowing seven hits. Killion pitched the remaining two innings, allowing hits while tossing two strikeouts.

Bridgewater will travel to Roanoke College on Friday for the ODAC Quarterfinals. Game one of the best-of-three series begins at 1:00 p.m.
