BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team split with the Guilford Quakers Sunday afternoon at Fulk Field.
Game One: Bridgewater 3, Guilford 5
Game one progressed quickly with no movement from either team heading into the sixth inning. Guilford took charge and a made it a 1-0 game on a single to center field.
With two outs left in the bottom of the seventh, Brooklynn Fridley hit a clutch RBI single to center field to score Sarah Wimer and tie the game at 1-1. Avery Pinder singled to third badr to load the bases for the Eagles but the home team was unable to get the winning run across.
Guilford used the extra inning to put four more runs on the board for the 5-1 edge. Bridgewater made it intersting when Sarah Wimer singled up the middle to cross Torie Shifflett and Katrin Martin but it ultimately was not enough to catch the Quakers.
Wimer led the Eagles with two hits and two RBIs. Kathryn Thomas pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and one run.
Game Two: Bridgewater 12, Guilford 0
The Eagle bats came alive in game two with a 6-0 advantage at the end of first inning, highlighted by a Sydney Layman two RBI double to left center. Bridgewater continued the strong hitting in the fourth, when Wimer and Ryann Crennan both earned RBIs to make it 0-8. With the bases loaded and only one out, Syndey Layman hit a grand slam to put the exclamation point on the day for the 12-0 victory in five innings.
Shifflett, Wimer, Samantha Hensley and Layman all had two hits for Bridgewater with Layman adding six RBIs. Brantley Swift pitched the shut out, allowing just two hits.
Bridgewater will have to wait a week to play again when they play host to Emory & Henry on April 17.
