Box Score
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – With a playoff spot on the line, the Bridgewater College field hockey team got multiple goals in every period in a 9-1 home rout of Virginia Wesleyan.
BC got two first quarter goals from Allison Thompson and two second period tallies from Caroline Quigley, both of whom ended up with hat tricks on the day.
Bridgewater, who would have been eliminated with a loss, instead secures the 5-seed in the ODAC playoffs and will travel to Shenandoah for the quarterfinals on Tuesday evening.
Thompson scored on both Bridgewater penalty corners in the opening period. On the first, VWU goalie Maura Bridges made a good kick save after Karinne Moyer set up Courtney Cooke before Thompson was able to force the rebound home. The BC defender added another late in the first quarter with an assist from Meredyth Rankin.
The Marlins had a 2-on-0 in the second quarter and Jaiden Shaw tipped in Catherine Dozier's shot to get the visitors back within a goal. Quigley answered less than two minutes later, sneaking a shot in off the foot of Bridges after she had made two kick saves earlier on the same possession.
A Virginia Wesleyan defender than lost her stick and intentionally kicked the ball away, leading to a penalty stroke late in the first half. Quigley lifted the shot over the blocker of Bridges for the 4-1 lead.
Thompson recorded a hat trick in the third quarter with a third penalty corner goal, this time finishing off a pass from Cooke. Bridgewater mixed it up with Quigley, who normally takes the insert, instead receiving the insert from Rankin and passing over to Cooke to help set up the goal.
Cooke assisted on the sixth goal as well, with senior Emmeline Mejia tipping in her shot right on the goalline. It was the first career goal for the BC senior who had just joined the team this season.
Moyer struck twice in 40 seconds in the fourth quarter, with the second one coming on a laser slap shot for Cooke's third assist of the contest.
After scoring twice in each quarter, the Eagles added an extra in the fourth period as Quigley capped the scoring.
Bridgewater is 4-5 on the season, while Virginia Wesleyan wraps up its 2020-21 campaign with a mark of 1-7.
