Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team lost two tight games to Lynchburg on Senior Day. The Eagles honored Marlee Carroll, Ryann Crennan, Keirsten Kennedy, Morgan Landes, Sydney Layman, Katrina Martin and Taylor Novak prior to the start of competition.
Game One: Bridgewater 2, Lynchburg 4
Torie Shifflett put the Eagles on the board early with a RBI single to left field to cross Avery Pinder for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Brooklynn Fridley added another RBI single to send Layman home for the 2-0 edge.
Entering the top of the third, Pinder flew through the air to make a heroic catch on a lineout to center but dropped the rocket hit on impact. Lynchburg proceeded to tie the game later in the third. The Hornets had the opportunity to go up big in the fifth inning, but a key double play highlighted by a smart Samantha Hensley throw to catcher Sarah Wimer ended the inning to keep the game at 2-2 all.
Neither the Eagles nor the Hornets were able to add runs to their total by the end of seven. In the top of the eighth, Lynchburg added a run on a double to center field and put up an insurance run on an Eagle error. Bridgewater could not catch the visitors lost 4-2 in eight innings.
Pinder, Shifflett, Hensley, Novak, Kathryn Thomas and Fridley all had one hit for Bridgewater. Brantley Swift pitched all eight innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs.
Game Two: Bridgewater 2, Lynchburg 4
Kennedy provided the games first scoring play on a RBI single to center field giving Wimer the path home for the 1-0 edge. The Hornets responded in the third with a three RBI triple to right center to put the visitors up 3-1. They would add one more run in the top of the fifth.
Crennan kicked off a crucial fifth inning for Bridgewater with a powerful single to left center. Fridley entered to run for Crennan and made the defense choose between her or Pinder to keep the Eagles with at least one runner on base after Pinder hit into a fielder's choice. With Fridley out, Pinder stole second and ran home on a Martin RBI to center field.
Bridgewater had chances in the final two innings to tie or take the lead but could not capitalize, falling 4-2.
Shifflett and Martin paced the Eagles with two hits. Emma Killion pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. Kennedy pitched the final two frames, allowing no hits and recording a strikeout.
The Eagles move to 9-5 on the year and return to Fulk Field tomorrow to take on the Guilford Quakers.
