NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After a dropping game one of the doubleheader, the Bridgewater College softball team bounced back to earn an impressive 2-1 win over No. 4 Christopher Newport on the road.
Game One: Bridgewater 0, CNU 7
The Eagles struggled offensively in game one, recording just two hits on a Torie Shifflett single in the first inning and a Sarah Wimer single in the fourth inning.
Avery Pinder stole a base for Bridgewater. Emma Killion pitched a complete game, allowing nine Captain hits and three earned runs.
Game Two: Bridgewater 2, CNU 1
With the game scoreless heading to the sixth inning, Wimer hit a double to center field to set-up what would be the winning sequence for the Eagles. Sydney Layman entered the game as a pinch runner and stole third on a wild pitch. Kaitlyn Tirona stepped up to the plate and hit a double down the left field line giving Layman the path home to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The left field line proved to be the sweet spot for the Eagles when Taylor Novak hit a single down it to move Tirona to first. Tirona would score on a well-timed Kathryn Thomas sacrifice bunt to give Bridgewater a 2-0 advantage.
CNU hit a double deep to right center field in the bottom of the seventh to put the tying run in play. Bridgewater sealed it when the Captains grounded out to third base.
Brantley Swift pitched seven innings and allowed five hits. Tirona led all batters with two hits while Katrina Martin, Wimer, Novak, Brooklynn Fridley and Pinder all contributed one.
Bridgewater returns to action when they travel back to the 757 for a April 6 doubleheader with reigning ODAC Champions No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan.
