HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team won two games over crosstown rival Eastern Mennonite on Monday to remain undefeated on the year.
Game One: Bridgewater 6, EMU 2
Kaitlyn Tirona started the scoring in the top of the third on a single to center field to send Torie Shifflett home for a 1-0 lead. The Eagles made it 3-0 in the fourth after a Katrina Martin RBI triple and a Shifflett RBI single.
EMU battled back to bring the Royals within one run at 3-2, but another great at bat from Shifflett resulted in a RBI triple to left center to cross Martin. Sarah Wimer added an exclamation point on the game with a two RBI home run to give the Eagles the 6-2 victory.
Martin and Shifflett had three hits each for Bridgewater followed by Wimer and Tirona with two. Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out five batters.
Game Two: Bridgewater 10, EMU 2
Bridgewater got up early in the top of the first after Wimer earned the fielder's choice RBI allowing Martin to run home. Brooklynn Fridley showed her speed in the second to steal thrid and score on an EMU throwing error on the attempt.
The Royals kept it close after adding a run in the second until the Eagle bats came alive. Fridley doubled up left center to score Morgan Landes and came home on an Avery Pinder single to the middle to make it 4-1. Martin kept the runs coming with a two RBI home run to end the fourth and give the Eagles a 6-1 edge.
Sydney Layman scored on a Royal error before Wimer added her second two RBI homer on the day putting the Eagles up 9-1. Jazymne Smith added one more on a sacrifice fly to bring Tirona home. EMU added their own homer in the bottom of the seventh but could not catch the Eagles.
Samantha Hensley led all batters with three hits followed by Martin and Tirona with two. Pinder stole two bases for Bridgewater. Kathryn Thomas pitched a complete game, allowing five hits.
Bridgewater will return to action tomorrow when they host ODAC foe Shenandoah for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
