FERRUM, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team earned two wins over ODAC foe Ferrum to move to 4-0 on the year.
Game One: Bridgewater 10, Ferrum 2
The Eagles jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage during a monster second inning. Sarah Wimer started the scoring by stealing home. Avery Pinder then sent Brooklynn Fridley home on a single down the left field line. Pinder also advanced to second on the throw and came home along with Morgan Landes after Katrina Martin was able to cause a Panther error in the outfield.
Torie Shifflet made it 5-0 on a double to left center field to cross Martin, and Shifflett scored after Samantha Hensley hit a RBI single up in the middle.
With the score at 6-0, the teams entered a three hour rain delay. Once play resumed, Ferrum picked up one run in the sixth. Katrina Martin shifted the attention back to the Eagles with a two RBI home run to put the Eagles up 8-1.
Jazmyne Smith made the most of her Eagle debut with a two RBI home run of her own later in the inning to put the Eagles up 10-1. Ferrum added one more run in the bottom of the seventh but could not catch the Eagles.
Hensley led Bridgewater with three hits followed by Pinder with two. Brantley Swift pitcher her first win of the year throwing all seven innings.
Game Two: Bridgewater 7, Ferrum 6
Bridgewater gained another early lead to go up 2-0 in the bottom of the second thanks to Panther errors. Torie Shifflett earned herself a home run in the top of the third to make it 3-0. Kaitlyn Tirona added two more on a two RBI double to left center to score Wimer and Sydney Layman.
Ferrum scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles responded by again capitlizing on Panthers errors to add another run. The Panthers came close and made it 6-3 before Martin singled to left field in the top of the sixth to send Kathryn Thomas home.
The home team came within striking distance of the win, but ulitmately the Eagles came out on top 7-6 to sweep the day.
Shifflett and Tirona had two hits each for the Eagles while Tirona added two RBIs. Emma Killion earned the first win of Eagle career from the circle after pitching five innings and allowing four hits. Keirsten Kennedy pitched the remaining two innings, allowing four hits.
Bridgewater returns to play on Monday, March 29 when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for a double-header starting at 3:30 p.m.
