Wimer Homers Twice in Season Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Va.Sarah Wimer hit two of three Eagle homers on the day to lift Bridgewater softball to a 2-0 start to the 2021 season.

Game One - Bridgewater 6, Mary Baldwin 0

After a successful shorten 2020 season, Bridgewater picked up right where they left off in the bottom of the first when both Torie Shifflet and Samantha Hensley singled. Wimer then hit a 2 RBI double to center field to send Hensley and Shifflett home. 

Later in the bottom of the third, Shifflet doubled down the left field line and stole third before coming home on a Hensley single to left field to put the Eagles up 3-0.

Bridgewater scored their remaining three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a Katrina Martin RBI single and another Wimer 2 RBI double. 

Kathryn Thomas picked up the win from the circle, throwing four innings and allowing two hits. Brantley Swift threw the remaining three innings, allowing no hits. 

Hensley, Shifflett, Wimer and Avery Pinder had two hits for the Eagles with Wimer adding her four RBIs. 

Game Two - Bridgewater 12, Mary Baldwin 3

After being down 3-0 entering the fourth, Wimer put the Eagles on the board with a solo homerun to make it 3-1. With the momentum on their side, the Eagles kicked off what would be an 11-run fourth inning with a Martin double to left field. Martin advanced after Shifflett hit a double of her own and both were sent home on a Hensley double to center field to even the game at 3-3. Wimer hit another RBI single and came home along with Sydney Layman on a passed ball from the Mary Baldwin pitcher. 

Kaitlyn Tirona joined the action on a 2 RBI triple to left to field, and Pinder provided a key sacrifice bunt to put the Eagles up 8-3. Martin and Wimer ended the lights out innings with a homerun each.

Wimer led the Eagles with three hits followed by Martin, Shifflett, Hensley, and Tirona with two a piece. 

Emma Killion pitched three innings, allowing five hits. Keirsten Kennedy earned the win from the circle allowing one hit in two innings.

Bridgewater returns to action this weekend when they travel to their crosstown rival EMU for games slated at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
