BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College football senior class exited Jopson Athletic Complex for the final time with a bang after an impressive 43-0 win over Guilford.
The Eagles opened up the scoring with a seven-play touchdown drive ending in a five-yard Matt Lawton scamper. The senior quarterback split playing time with Kenneth McCray, the other senior quarterback on the roster, both who ended the day with respectable stat lines. Along with his rushing touchdown, Lawton ended the day 11-for-21 passing for 131 yards. McCray finished 8-for-11 passing for 81 yards and a touchdown, along with 26 yards on the ground.
No group made a bigger impact on the game than Bridgewater's special teams. On Guilford's third drive of the day, freshman defensive lineman Tucker Harris broke through the line and blocked the punt, picked it up, and took it to the house. On the ensuing extra point, Bridgewater broke out the trickeration with a Freddie Watkins toss to Stephen Kloosterman for the two-point conversation. The very next drive Guilford would punt again, this time having it returned 47-yards by Robert Barlow Jr. to the Guilford 33-yard line. This led to a four-play touchdown drive to give Bridgewater the 22-0 lead.
Bridgewater ended their first-half scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass from McCray to Kyle Beck, the sophomore tight end's first touchdown of the season.
After a scoreless third quarter, Demetreus Jalepes finished off the six-play drive in the fourth with a 10-yard rushing touchdown. Jalepes wrapped up an excellent career with a solid day on the ground, rushing 13 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
To end the day's scoring, Chase Rosenthal grabbed his second interception of the day returning it 35 yards for the touchdown. Rosenthal and the Bridgewater defense put on a clinic, holding the Guilford defense to zero points while recording three interceptions, eight sacks, and 15 TFL's.
Leading the way for Bridgewater's defense was Brett Tharp who led the team in tackles with 15. Tharp also racked up a sack and three and a half TFL's. Da'Sean Davis also put up a solid stat line, recording six tackles, two sacks and three and a half TFL's. Harris ended his day with two blocked punts as well as two pass deflections at the line of scrimmage.
The win was the first ODAC win of head coach Scott Lemn's career. Bridgewater finishes the season 4-6.
