Eagles Fall To Defending National Champions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.- The Bridgewater College softball team dropped two games against No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Marlins are the two-time defending national champions.

Game One: Bridgewater 0, Virginia Wesleyan 13

After a delayed start due to transportation issues, Virginia Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the board on the first inning. The Eagles had the Marlins at two outs before a slew of hits grew to a 5-0 Marlin lead.

The Marlins added two more in the second on a two RBI double to left field. The home team would score six more in the fourth for a 13-0 advantage. Bridgewater could not add any runs in the top of fifth, giving Virginia Wesleyan the win.

Lindsey Talley notched the only for the Eagles in game one on the first at-bat of the game. Carolyn Campbell and Emily Clifford split pitching duties with Campbell facing 24 batters and Clifford eight. Campbell allowed 11 hits and ten runs. Clifford allowed one hit and three runs.

Game Two: Bridgewater 3, Virginia Wesleyan 11

The Marlins put one run on the board in the first off an RBI to center field. They added two more in the second on another RBI and a Bridgewater error.

Ryann Crennan provided the Eagles first run of the day in the third on a home run. The visitors scored two more runs in the fifth starting with a Stephanie Carroll RBI to right center field to send Avery Piner home. The second run came when Morgan Landes stole second and gave Talley just enough time to run home.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Marlins led 4-3. They added seven more runs in the inning for a 11-3 edge and win.

Crennan and Carroll led Bridgewater with two hits and a RBI each. Victoria Gontarz and Katrina Martin each added one hit.

Brooke Louden allowed ten hits and nine runs with Keirsten Kennedy allowing three hits and two runs.

With tomorrow's games against Frostburg State cancelled, the Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, March 26 against Shenandoah. It will be Bridgewater's ODAC home opener. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
