Field Hockey Loses at W&L But Will Have Rematch in Playoffs

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Bridgewater College field hockey team lost its regular season finale 3-1 at Washington & Lee, but qualified for the ODAC playoffs.

Kelsey Hicks scored with less than two minutes remaining in the game, collecting a ball off a penalty corner that redirected off a defender, and finishing it off into the left side of the cage.

The Eagles were guaranteed a playoff spot unless Virginia Wesleyan beat Roanoke 1-0, and the Maroons scored in the first quarter to eliminate any possibility of that en route to a 3-0 final.

Washington & Lee got two second quarter goals from Lauren Paolano, in a period where Bridgewater's Ali Bishop made six saves.

Emily Witzke came in for the second half and stopped four fourth quarter attempts, but the Generals added a third in the final period before Hicks got BC on the board late.

The Eagles will now head right back to Lexington on Tuesday for the ODAC quarterfinals, as sixth-seeded Bridgewater will face the third-seeded Generals in the postseason.

Tuesday's winner will face Shenandoah in the semifinals, with top seed Lynchburg slated to host the ODAC final four.
