Gaston Reaches 1,000 Kills in Tri-Match Split

FREDERICK, Md. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team dropped their second match of the season to Arcadia before bouncing back to defeat Hood in straight sets.

Game One: Bridgewater 0, Arcadia 3 (25-8, 25-14, 25-16)

Bridgewater fell behind early in each set and could never catch back up to  the Knights. Arcadia served nine aces in the match compared to three for the Eagles. 

Rachel Gaston notched her 1,000th career in the first set. She had eight total in the match to go with 13 digs. 

Hope Jennings paced the Eagles with nine kills and Taylor McNeely collected 12 digs.

Game Two: Bridgewater 3, Hood 0 (25-13, 25-18, 26-24)

The Eagles bounced back nicely in their second match of the day, holding the Blazers to a .132 hitting percentage in the match. 

Bridgewater jumped out to a commanding 13-4 advantage in set one behind four kills from Gaston. The senior ended the set with one of her match high 16 kills.

Hood did not back down in the second set and tied it at 13-13. A Jennings kills gave the ball back to the Eagles and sent the sophomore behind the service line. She then served four straight, including an ace, to give Bridgewater the momentum needed to finish the set. Jessica Bissmeyer ended it on a setter attack.

Bridgewater stormed out to a 6-1 edge in the third set, highlighted by two aces from Sarah Kerns. After a few Eagle errors, the Blazers tied the game at 7-7. The teams traded points down to the wire until a Hood ball handling error and another Kerns ace gave the Eagles the 3-0 win in extra points.

Gaston not only had a match high in kills, but a match high 17 digs. McNeely was right behind with 16 digs. Jennings had a .400 hitting percentage and added three blocks and six digs for a solid performance. Bissmeyer had 20 assists while Grace Hayes had 13. 

The Eagles, who are receiving votes in the AVCA poll,  are now 19-2 on the season. They return to the court on Wednesday, October 16 at Virginia Wesleyan for a big match with conference tournament implications. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
