Eagles Close Out Regular Season At Lynchburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College closed out its regular season Sunday afternoon with a pair of close setbacks to Lynchburg College, losing 3-0 in the first game and falling 1-0 in eight innings in the second contest.

The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1 and that proved to be enough offense for Lynchburg pitcher Connor English who blanked the Eagles on just three hits.

The Hornets opened the bottom of the first with three straight hits against Eagles' starter Brooke Louden. Skylar Dickens led off with a single and scored on a double by Mackenzie Chitwood for a quick 1-0 lead. Taylor Mabry then singled to put runners on the corners. Chitwood scored to make it 2-0 when Leslie Bourgeois grounded into a double play.

English retired the Eagles in order for the first three innings before Lindsey Talley led off the fourth with a single.

After the first inning, Louden settled in and kept the Eagles in contention, allowing just one run the rest of the way.

The second game turned into a classic pitching duel between Bridgewater's Keirsten Kennedy and Lynchburg's Kayley Cox. Kennedy limited the Hornets to just four hits in the first seven innings while Cox stymied the Eagles on just two hits.

The Eagles started the eighth inning with pinch-runner Allison Patrick on second base. Kennedy then put down a bunt but the Lynchburg defense cut Patrick down trying to advance to third for the first out of the inning. Cox then retired Jessica Dawson on a fly ball and Morgan Landes on a liner to second to end the inning.

The bottom of the eighth started with pinch-runner MacKenzie Mount on second base. Dominique King then moved Mount to third with a sacrifice bunt. Dickens worked the count for a walk and then the Eagles elected to intentionally walk Chitwood to load the bases. Mabry followed with a single to center, giving the Hornets the 1-0 victory.

Stephanie Carroll had both hits off Cox in the second game.

Bridgewater closes out the regular season with a 15-23 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the ODAC.
