BRIDGEWATER - Bridgewater earned a split in Thursday's doubleheader by winning the second game, 8-2, over Mary Washington at Fulk Field. The visitors defeated Bridgewater in the opener, 8-5.
Mary Washington jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings in the opener and Bridgewater was unable to climb all the way back.
After the visitors added a run in the top of the fourth to lead 7-0, Bridgewate got on the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth. With one out, Mikalia Guard singled and Stephanie Carroll walked. With two outs and runners on second and third, Carolyn Campbell hit a hard grounder up the middle that went off the pitcher's glove for a base hit and both runs scored to pull the Eagles to within 7-2.
Bridgewater tallied again in the fifth on Mariah Wharton's run-scoring single, making the score 7-3.
Mary Washington added its final run in the top of the seventh and the Eagles tallied twice in the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles loaded the bases with no outs and, with two outs, Lindsey Talley singled to left-center, scoring Bridgewater's final two runs.
In the second game, Bridgewater scored three times in the first and never trailed. Talley reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved the second on a grounder. A single by Katie Merhout put runners on the corners before a two-run double to the right-center gap by Guard gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Guard moved to third on Carroll's single and scored on a groundout by Brianna Whorley, making the score 3-0.
Mary Washington scored twice in the third to make it a one run game, but the Eagles took control with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
Talley led off the fourth with an infield single and pinch-runner Marlee Carroll moved to third when Hannah Nyquist reached base after her sacrifice bunt attempt was fielded and thrown away for an error. Marlee Carroll scored on a goundout by Carlita Tibbs, pushing the Eagles ahead 4-2. Nyquist scored on a wild pitch and Whorley drove in a run with a single to center, putting the Eagles up 6-3.
Lauren Wilson led off the fifth inning for the Eagles with a single and moved around to third on a pair of wild pitches. Talley drew a walk before Wilson scored on another wild pitch, giving Bridgewater a 7-2 lead. A walk to Nyquist and a single by Guard loaded the bases with two outs. Stephanie Carroll drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Bridgewater's final run.
The game was halted due to darkness after Mary Washington hit in the top of the sixth inning.
Anna Patterson went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for Bridgewater in the second game. She allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Stephanie Carroll was a perfect 5-for-5 in the doubleheader with three runs scored and one run batted in. Guard was 5-for-8 in the two games with two RBIs and Talley finished 4-for-8 with two RBIs.
Bridgewater, now 5-8 overall returns to action Friday afternoon for a doubleheader with Mary Baldwin.
