Softball Drops Pair To Guilford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College was unable to slow down Guilford's potent offense Saturday afternoon as the Quakers defeated the Eagles 9-2 and 11-7 to sweep the ODAC doubleheader.

The Quakers loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first and a pair of groundouts staked the visitors to a quick 2-0 lead.

Bridgewater answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first to tie the score. Lindsey Talley led off with a single and Victoria Gontarz was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Talley scored on a passed ball to put the Eagles on the board. Gontarz trotted home from third on Mikalia's Guard's single to tie the score.

After two scoreless frames, the Quakers took advantage of two Eagles' errors to score twice in the fourth to take the lead for good, 4-2.

A run-scoring double by Katy Holt in the fifth and a run-scoring single by Makayla Carver in the sixth pushed the Guilford lead to 6-2.

Guilford (24-10, 9-5 in the ODAC) loaded the sacks in the seventh on three straight walks and consecutuve singles by Caroline Barnette, Taylor Boyd and Natalie Conrad pushed the final tally to 9-2.

Carver went the distance in the circle for the Quakers, allowing two runs in just three hits. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

In the second game, the Quakers scored seven runs in the top of the third to open up an 11-0 lead over the Eagles.

Bridgewater got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Jessica Dawson's two-out, bases-loaded single chased home a pair of runs, making the score 11-2.

Three runs in the bottom of the fifth trimmed the Guilford lead to 11-5. Lauren Wilson led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Mariah Wharton. After Carlita Tibbs popped out, Katie Merhout single to left, scoring Wilson to make it 11-3. Dawson popped out for the second out of the inning before Ryan Kirtner walked to load the bases. Stephanie Carroll then singled to right, scoring two runs to pull the Eagles closer at 11-5.

Dawson drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to force in a run to make it 11-6 and the Eagles added another run in the seventh. Carroll walked to lead off the seventh and she moved to second on Hannah Nyquist's single up the middle. Carroll scored on Wharton's two-out single to right, making the score 11-7. With two runners on, Tibbs grounded out, ending the second contest with the Quakers on top 11-7.
