BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team scored 21 runs Tuesday to take two games from Southern Virginia 7-2 and 14-4 in non-conference action.

The Eagles led 4-0 after the first three innings of the opener and never looked back.

Lindsey Talley reached on an error to open the first, but was erased on a force play at second on a grounder to third by Victoria Gontarz. Mikalia Guard then belted a two-run homer, her fifth of the season, to put the Eagles on top 2-0.

The Eagles made it 3-0 when Lacey Shifflett led off the second with a solo homer to left center. A run-scoring single in the third inning by Carlita Tibbs made the score 4-0.

The Eagles used the long ball again in the sixth to expand the lead. Mariah Wharton led off the inning with a double and Katie Merhout followed with a two-run homer to center for a 6-0 advantage.

Bridgewater scored its final run in the sixth when Talley singled with one out, stole second, took third on a fly ball and scored on a single by Guard to put the Eagles up 7-0.

The Knights avoided a shutout with two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final 7-2 margin.

Carolyn Campbell went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She allowed two runs on five base hits.

Guard was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the offense.

The Eagles broke the nightcap open with a six-run, third inning outburst to take a 12-0 lead as they ended the contest in five innings.

Merhout drove in a run in the first-inning as the Eagles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Four more runs in the second pushed the margin to 6-0. Merhout once again delivered a key blow, this tine with a two-run homer.

Hannah Nyquist drove in two runs in the third with a single to put the Eagles up 8-0. Tibbs and Merhout added RBI-singles before Jessica Dawson capped the inning with a two-run double to center, putting the Eagles comfortably ahead, 12-0. 

The hosts pulled to within 12-4 before the Eagles closed the game with two runs in the fifth. Ryan Kirtner reached on a walk and scored on Stephanie Carroll's double. Carroll raced home on a single by Wharton for the final 14-4 margin.

Merhout was 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Eagles in the second game. Merhout finished the twinbill with a total of six RBIs. Carroll also had three hits while Nyquist, Tibbs and Dawson each added a pair of base hits.

Hannah Trala and Anna Patterson combined to hold the Knights to five hits and two earned runs in five innings. Trala pitched three innings to earn the victory.

Bridgewater, now 10-24 on the season, returns to action Thursday when the Eagles host Randolph-Macon for an ODAC doubleheader.
